EGR valve !!!

I've had this problem on my cars almost persistently for about 5 years. I did try to get it sorted once - £120 to go on the machine another 200 ish for the repair. After 3 months it came back. I took it to a trusted mechanic he cleaned it out and charged me £10 - worked for about 6 months but then it came on again. That was probably 4 years ago. I've passed numerous MOTs and there is no visible emission.
It seems to be a known issue amongst mechanics and they dont seem too fussed by it.0 -
Aye, more and more people are blanking them off now0

If you use supermarket diesel, then it's worth sticking a bottle of fuel-based cleaner in every tank to prevent this happening.
My friend purchased a 1.6HDi (70bhp) Picasso with 100,000 miles on the clock. It was really sluggish, so he took it to a local garage with a good rep for fixing things that the manufacturers said couldn't be.
The diagnosed a gummed-up EGR valve and DPF and suggested trying some stuff not unlike Redexx, but much more expensive.
They also told him to avoid supermarket diesel for a while and stick to premium brands to see if that made any difference.
Within 3 months, he noticed the car was much more lively and now follows the routine of only using supermarket fuel every 3rd fill-up & using fuel additives every other tank full.
Role forward 18 months to now, and his car will now accelerate up a nearby hill in 4th, when before it would slow down to the point it was in1st gear by the time he got to the top.Never Knowingly Understood.

Correct, EGR valves can be cleaned but it depends on the model year of the car.
For example the older VAG 2.0 TDI engines with no DPF made till around '08, the EGR valves in these can be cleaned out out for around £30ish at any independent garage. For the later TDI's with DPF the cost would be higher to clean out the EGR as the particulate filter and some other components would have to be removed first0 -
What model of Toyota is it?0

thank you guys..it is corolla verso 2007, 2.2 D4D. I never use supermarket diesel due to horror stories I heard...and by the way, the engine is only 14 months old, fitted by Toyota in Nov.13 under extended warranty due to known fault with head gasket in this model..the new engine has done only 10K miles0

I use supermarket diesel and petrol for every tank and have done so for years. I've travelled probably 200K+ miles on supermarket diesel and have never had a duff EGR, DPF problems, blocked injectors, failed fuel pumps, or any of the other supposed problems it causes.
99% of these problems are caused by driving cycle type. Supermarket fuel is rarely if ever the problem it's made out to be.0 -
I'd also recommend posting on a site such as http://forum.rav4driversclub.com/ We're a friendly bunch and there are several who have had the replacement engine and know about the issues with this engine. Alternatively you could try the verso forum on toyotaownersclub.com but I'm not sure how active it is.0

Care to link to the WSM showing this procedure? I've never come across an EGR downstream of a DPF or physically located nearby which would require its removal to access.0
