EGR valve !!!
Options
For a week now I had the engine management light on the dashboard of my diesel Toyota. The car has become very slow in first gear although normal after that. I took it to a garage I trust and they connected it to computer and the result was EGR valve fault. Cost to replace is over £400 (£320 for the part alone) ...today the engine management light disappeared and the car is driving normally...is it worth ignoring it or will it come back?

It is likely to come back in time if it was the EGR valve. Have you changed driving habits in the past week, given it an Italian tune up etc, sometimes changes in driving habits can help.0

If you paid to have the EGR valve changed, and the fault has come back, then I would expect to take it back.0

Thanks guys...no I didn't replace the valve yet..it seems that the problem has sorted itself!!! Or will it come back? And I did not change driving habit although the fault appeared after a long 200 miles journey0

It's probably full of crud and sticking ... it will come back.0

I read somewhere that it can be cleaned rather than replaced..is that true?0

Most EGR's can be cleaned, you might be better off letting a competent Diesel shop do the job, if you don't know of one ask local taxi drivers where they go.0

Thank you.. I asked my garage who said they will try to clean it but can't guarantee the result0

It might be worth having a poke nose round some Toyota or Diesel forums, could be easier cheaper and a better long term solution to just by pass the thing, but as with all these things its handy if someone has blazed this trail first to see if it works.0

I had the engine management light come on soon after I bought my deseasel Astra. I took it to the dealer & they ordered some sort of valve thing (sorry about the jargon) & said they would let me know when it comes in. I'm still waiting for the part 11 years later but the light hasn't come back on yet.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

What model and age of Toyota is it? And if you know, what engine type?
On some models the egr is right at the front of the engine, right in front of you, so very easy to remove and then clean out the crud with some carb cleaner, assuming its just coked up.
I had the same issue with mine which has the 1ad-ftv engine, and it was just crud holding the egr slightly open. It took me a hour and £3 of carb cleaner to fix it.0
