I have checked Experian and Equifax credit reports and both look fine so I have no idea why they have declined me and if I'm not told how can I resolve it?

The not on the Experian file just says Vodafone requested a search on this date etc... nothing about being declined which as I understand it wouldn't because all Experian do is provide the info it is then up to Vodafone to interpret it along with other criteria I guess and decide to give me credit or not. I have never held an account with Vodafone nor has any of my financial associates listed on my report so I cant see it being from historical issues.

Is there an ombudsman I could take this further with?

As in your partner? Parent(s)? If you are financially linked with someone and they have a poor credit rating, your rating will be the same. This could have been the reason for the decline.

  • Sorry, yes my wife is the only financial associate listed, she also have no issues, we have checked Experian, not checked on Equifax yet so I will do that to be sure.
  • I would just like to say thank you for all of the advice, I have gone from feeling quite alone and not sure where to go to understand a lot more now. I will write to the head office to try to get a reason for being declined. If they don't tell me I can't do anything about it! other than that I see no reasons on my credit ratings so it must be something else they check on.

Could it be a typo in a bank account, driving licence etc...? they guy inputting the data did get a few things wrong when we were telling in DOB etc...

    Thanks again.
  • Head office will not tell you why you were declined, and instead refer you to your credit report. No financial institution will tell you why you have been declined, its not just Vodafone.

Think about it, if we all told exactly why then some people and fraudsters could use this information to manipulate the applications in their favour.

Internal credit scoring information is company confidential, Vodafone would have no sight of your Equifax and Experian score and use internal processes to generate their own.

Are you on the electoral roll and does this show on your reports?

Do you have many other credit lines eg card, loans etc?

What are the limits on your cards and how much of this is used?

Have you checked your wife's files to make sure everything is ok?

No missed payments or a past history of credit problems?

    What's your annual salary?

Have you had any other mobile provider contracts in the past showing on your files?

Not sure why you would feel alone about being declined for a £12pm data contract. It's not like you've been refused a kidney!

Vodafone won't tell you why you were declined, so it's best not to waste any more time on it.
  • In answer to Candy Apple:-

Yes on electoral role and lived in the same house for over 13yrs

No outstanding credit other than mortgage but several credit cards paid off each month

According to Experian 21k available credit and £42 outstanding at the time of the report

Not checked the wife's yet but I don't expect any issues but I will order a report.

Never missed a payment on anything, also this is shown on the reports

    Annual Salary >50k

I have contracts with O2 and 3 again no issues.

    In answer to Gordon Hose:-
I felt alone as I have never had this happen to me before, never checked my credit report before, remiss of me I know. I was not sure where to go to ask advice, it seems it is not clear. If they will not tell why you have been declined how can you possibly investigate it and sort it?

I want to waste time on it as I want to understand why, I work hard to make sure I control my money and don't expect to be declined for £12/month contract

Oops posted here when I didn't mean to.
  • Is your electoral roll shown as confirmed for 2015? I can't get mine confirmed until March because Scottish electoral rolls are not being published until then. It has always been December of the preceding up to now. English electoral rolls published in December 2014 as usual.
