Fibre speeds affected by ?

I was just wondering whether the fact that most of my neighbours appear to be using the same ISP as myself, will affect my connection speed to fibre ?
Or is this something that I need not worry about ?
I believe that ADSL is reduced by use by neighbours ?

Yes but in practise you should not notice it .
Same as all the net the more users the slower the end product .

That's what I assumed - digital is not affected as Analogue was...
The signal is either there or not there - no attenuation factor ?

The more users on the exchange the slower it can get whether on DSL or fibre.

Happy with my fibre from PN. Sometimes the sites i use are almost as slow as before.
The problem just moves down the line, As more users get fibre and faster speeds the harder the server has to work to supply them all.

I have a family site with slideshow galleries, it was OK before but get several fibre users trying to access the same slideshows and it slowed down.

The problem was they would be talking on facebook or similar and going through the slides and talking about them and all jumping to the same slides.

I had to mirror them to spread the load.

Both ADSL and FTTC use the same technology up to the point where they change over to modulated RF signals carried by twisted pair wires to your home. The difference is that the ADSL wired section is typically a lot longer as it runs right back to the exchange and so has to use a different (and slower) technology from FTTC which has shorter twisted pair runs to the street cabinet only. Both are affected by distance.

Even the signals along the fibre are affected by attenuation and have to use in line amplifiers but they don't affect the speed or capacity.

The reason attenuation alters the speed of the wired section ADSL and FTTC is because higher frequencies suffer higher attenuation. As the high frequency slots become unusable there are less slots available to carry the traffic.
  • On fibre (fttc) you are more than likely to suffer from cross talk noise once more users are added to your cabinet. This is noise from other VDSL2+ lines at the cabinet. My max attainable rate has dropped from 119meg to 86meg over the last 10 months. Obviously I am still synced at 80 meg but for how long :(

Yes cross talk will increase as takeup increases. There is always the chance that vectoring may get around it to some extent if it becomes much of an issue or if hey want to push higher speeds. FTTC still isn't likely to outshine cable on headlne speeds though.
