Super fast broadband disappointing

I signed up for superfast broadband via my bb supplier, UWD. I live in an area which has recently been updated by BT. The box was fitted and I was quite surprised to see a BT engineer doing the work and he told me that we are supplied by TalkTalk!
I've been using it now for several weeks and am very disappointed, it really doesn't seem any faster. Occasionally a page will load a bit quicker but I'm still seeing pages hang, especially forums and online newspapers and search results. I've tried several online speed tests which suggest I'm getting speeds of between 50-60 mps but much slower upload speeds. I really can't believe this as I spend heaps of time online and really haven't seen the speed change much at all.
Of course the contract terms that you have to sign when you sign up are quite clear that the supplier isn't responsible if you don't get the performance you are hoping for. I'm tied in to 18 months, is there anything I can do to improve the speed? I use an imac and ipad mostly and there are only 2 users in the house.

Are you complaining about your speed of 50-60 mb or are you complaining that many of the sites you visit are not faster ??
Is your speed measure via ethernet cable or measured via WiFi .Have you measured from the master socket . Did your ISP give you an indication of likely speed ??
BT Open Reach are responsible for the phone lines .0 -
I'm complaining that it definitely isn't that fast. The speed things load at now are much the same as before they changed everything over. I used two different speed checks online so presume it's measuring over wifi. My imac is right by the master socket. ISP says on their website "up to 70 mps".0

<<I'm complaining that it definitely isn't that fast >>>
What speeds are you getting ?????
UP TO means just that and depends upon many factors including distance from exchange cable quality etc .
<two different speed checks online so presume it's measuring over wifi >
If you are using Wifi then its subject to many other factors including neighbouring signals .You need to measure from the master socket with an ethernet cable connected to the PC from the router and router connected to the master socket . That gives you a truer speed .
Master socket does not give out a WiFi Signal its the router that does that .
A speed of 50 - 60 is more than adequate for the vast majority of users . What are you downloading that requires excess speed .
Pages / web sites not loading is usually the web site concerned . Or the DNS lookup . If i look at this forum on a 2mb connection or a 76 mb connection it would be about the same .0 -
Sounds like I have misunderstood what superfast bb is all about then. I guess I was expecting things to load much quicker, I'm a tad impatient lol. The router is connected to the master socket just not to the computers. That said, surely not every website can be slow to load or am I being too optimistic? If superfast bb isn't for speeding up browsing what is it for? I don't download films or engage in gaming so maybe I should have saved my money?0

20 mb would be adequate for 99% of use .
Fibre broadband is just a wider and faster pipe than the old fashioned phone line .
If a lot of web sites are slow to load then fault is the PC or the ISP DNS lookup .
Be worth posting to your ISPs forum a slow page loading post .

Thanks, I'll see if they have one. Utility Warehouse so I'm not too optimistic.0

If you are the ONLY user on a website, then maybe you can get them to send at 50Mbps, but they probably have a per user speed limit anyway.
Try to download a Microsoft service pack, say 200MB worth.
If you do it at a quiet time, like 3am, see the counter blitz up.
If you do it at 7pm, you can probably have supper, and it's still downloading when you come back.
It's exactly the same as the motorway system. You think you paid extra by buying a Porsche, so you should be able to drive up to Manchester in two hours from London, but you get stuck near Birmingham like everyone else.
Well, you could have done it 30 years ago, at 3am, before all the average speed cameras, if you really wanted to; but you need to have diplomatic immunity to not go to prison. Nowadays, it's chuckerblock all the time.0
