Something like this happened to me - premiums definitely go up! Now its been reported to your insurance it will need to be declared at the next few renewals.

How much your premium goes up by, or whether it goes up at all, depends very much on your own circumstances and your insurer. Out of curiosity I got a couple of quotes a while ago through a comparison site with and without a recent £1000 no fault claim and found that it would put my cheapest quote up by a little over five pounds - hardly worth getting too upset about. Your own experience may vary.

If your premium does increase, some people have reported success in reclaiming the difference from the third party's insurer, though you will have to be quite persistent and assertive - and personally I wouldn't bother if it was a matter of a fiver.

Now that you've told your insurer, and will have to declare the accident going forwards anyway, you have little to lose by pursuing a claim. If you go direct to the third party's insurer they will not pay more than the market value of your car for repairs, but if they judge it to be a write off they will probably be quite happy to let you keep the car, deduct its scrap value from the settlement, and send you a cheque which you can spend on repairs or a new TV as you see fit.
  • Forget being written off, You have a right to have your car reinstated to the condition it was in before she hit you. Doesn't matter if the repairs cost more than the car is worth, you could go out and buy a new car with the money but it might turn out to be a bag of nails where as your damaged car was super reliable.

Very frustrating, One good thing i suppose is.. as i was in the shop at the time, she came in the shop to see who's car she hit... She could of drove off so thankfully she didn't.

Does anyone know the process when claiming off another persons insurance? I want to have everything ready for when they contact me, Shall i make photocopies of my driving license etc?

Just want it to go as quick as possible as i can't open my drivers side door, or safely drive the car as the wheel scraps on the wheel arch bit where it was dented.

How much did your insurance go up by after your last non fault claim?

If you have an accident, regardless of fault, you are statistically more likely to have another one, thus your premium goes up.

And yeah, in my case I had two non-fault claims and my premium went up an extra £300. Which I managed to cut to £200 with some haggling.

On average one non-fault claim will bump your premium by around £50-£100 per year for 5 years.

Wow, it's just a joke that I'm going to pay more when all I did was park my car, pop into a shop, and someone hits me because they were relying on a parking sensor.

I think I'll be doing some shopping around when renewal is due, Im with Hastings direct and don't know how they will be with upping the price.

It is unfair, but I guess you have to look at the people who instead of letting faster a driver past, will instead actively engage and block them by slowing down, blocking lanes, getting them to tailgate and then brake testing them.
They often do this with a "if they hit me it's not my fault", but the insurance companies need a way to pick these passive aggressive drivers out and punish them.

So unfortunately whether it's your fault or not, you end up paying.
