Hi there all,

This morning my car was parked at our local shop, some woman came inside and asked who owns the car outside, i said i did and she said i've just hit in.

Upon going outside she had reversed into the front drivers side wing area, She said her parking sensors didn't go off and she couldn't see behind her as her childs car seat was blocking her view. She has accepted responsibility for it and gave us all her details.

I've contacted my insurance company and they asked how do we want to claim, we have said we want to claim on her insurance, What i'm worried about is going through insurance is probably going to have my car written off, i really don't want this as there is nothing else wrong with it, and its just had repairs done on it and i just simply know the car and really don't want it written off.

We asked the woman how she wants to proceed, if she wants to go through insurers or if she wants us to get a quote for repairs and they pay. We managed to get a quote of £308 to get it all done. She said to us that her partner works on cars and she has yet to contact him about the incident but will get back to us when shes spoken to him

What i'm worried about is if they say they want to go through insurance, we probably will just not continue the claim, can we do this? Because im almost certain they will write the car off and i will end up just having to foot the bill myself. The other thing i was wondering is will this put my premium up? The incident wasn't my fault and im concerned my prices will go up and i will lose my no claims bonus even though it wasn't my fault and we may not even be making a claim as of yet because knowing they probably will write it off, if we can we won't bother with insurance.

Hope to hear back from someone, sorry its kinda a long post but wanted to give as much detail as possible.

No fault claims still affect your premium, just not your NCB.

Be ready for her insurance co to comeback claiming it was your fault, they will do this even before they have her report. They'll see damage to rear of her car and damage to the front of yours and they'll probably blame you before coming back with a 50/50 offer. So don't stress if that happens, it was probably nothing to do with the lady that hit your car!!

Finally..... Why can't people learn to drive properly instead of needing to use electronic parking aids????

Sounds like its going to be a lot of hassle, Probably worth not bothering with insurance, I mean i just went into the shop and this lady has hit my car because she was relying on her parking sensors. It might be best taking the loss and not bothering with insurance, I can't see it fair my premium going up so i probably won't bother making a claim.

You've contacted your insurance already, so whether you claim or it gets sorted with cash, they will still know and still need to be told in the future. Although I've had non-fault bumps in the past and been lucky to not have any premium rises.

Hopefully it doesn't raise it... Kinda seems silly that my insurance would rise because someone has hit me.. I guess that's just the way it works these days.

It's all based on statistics annoyingly, best thing to do every year is shop around for car insurance.

Although I'd hate to be bery_451's insurers.

Our renewal is due in October so will see what happens then. In the meantime we are waiting to hear back from the lady that hit my car, She said she was going to speak to her partner as he works on cars, So they may make an offer.. All depends, the only issue we have is if we refuse and let the insurance deal with it, we have the risk of a write off and really don't want that.

If she insists on going through the insurance, I would go straight to her insurance company and deal direct with them. This way, they are much less likely to write your car off.

As an example, in 2012 another motorist hit my 2003 reg Ford Fiesta (probably worth around £1500 at the time). Once the other party admitted fault, I contacted their insurance company, told them their customer had hit my car and had admitted fault and that I wanted my car repairing.

The cheapest quote I got for the repairs to my car were £1500 and the insurance company paid for the repair and for a hire car for 3 weeks, so a fair amount more than what my car was actually worth.

If I had gone through my own insurance company, they would have written the car off.

One other thing i was wondering, I have 2 years no claims from my previous policy, The policy i have now i started in october last year, so i informed them i have 2 years no claims, Will this be affected over this incident? I mean if i don't claim do i keep those 2 years i got from my previous policy?

i don't have any no claims with my current insurer, im only 3 months into the policy

How much did your insurance go up by after your last non fault claim?

Your no claims bonus will not be affected at all if you make the claim directly from the other party's insurer. You will have three years NCB when you renew later this year, assuming you avoid any more incidents until then.

If you make the claim on your own policy your NCB will be reduced when you make the claim, but restored when your insurers recover their costs from her insurers (which does not sound like it will be problematic, though it can take a while). It will not cost you any extra immediately, but it can make life complicated if the claim is still unresolved at renewal time as you will have no NCB to use, and this will be reflected in your renewal quote. If you stay with the same company your insurer should refund the difference in premium when it does eventually get settled; if you change insurer in the meantime it can get more complicated than that.

This is one of the reasons why it's usually better to go directly to the third party's insurers in situations like this, rather than make the claim on your own policy.
