  • Sorry to hear you were feeling down pre 6am this morning DF0D and glad to hear you're now feeling more positive. The thing is we all need our cars nowadays. I think you've done the right thing as by keeping the old one you were just prolonging the issue IMO. Hope you can save elsewhere on tax or something.

Yay to the OP's thats more like it!!! xx

  • I had a similar feeling. Enthusiastic about new car, followed by devastation at £4K to pay off! But a spreadsheet fiddle later and treating the car as a necessity and head cleared. We're fortunate that the car will be 0% and we can still OP, albeit a but less for a few years. However in back if mind the car will last us 10 so when it's paid you can imagine where the cash us going. We've also said no more cars till mortgage gone and MRS SJ has agreed (need to get that in writing), so a new challenge was set!
    MFW: Was: £136,000.......Now: £47,736.58......
  • Thank you all for your posts.. As you say SJ, I just need to fiddle and get my head sorted, plus this car will last 4-6 years I would have thought, its 50k less mileage than current, it's a bit of beast in that it's an estate, but means the kids bikes will fit in and all the beach stuff can get chucked in. We've got it from a dealer as well so have some assurance in terms of warranty etc. Dh knows I'm a pretty confident driver and will drive almost anything, but when he said in front of the dealer, sure its not too long for you, you could see the dealer thinking i was obviously a nightmare woman driver! Actually quite excited to pick it up, might treat myself to a new air freshener!

Motivation is zero in this house today, only DD has got dressed.. be glad when everything is really back to normal tomorrow in terms of routines etc.

Need to meal plan later and get really into gear with my weight loss efforts. 5lb off so far this year!

Our smallish car (paid for) had to go to car heaven. We then had to get a loan for a new one. Was so depressing! Like you we got a big beast and it's so fantastic. We can fit all the camping stuff in so that saved us a fortune on holidays and like you say it fits the kids bikes in which is great for days out. You will shift it in no time x

  • Thank you Muser! I'm feeling much more positive today. DH told the inlaws about the car and they did make noises about giving us the money, but we said no. They have offered to pay for the service for DH's car, so we accepted that kind offer, will save us some pennies this month.

Mr T arrived with (hopefully) 8 days worth of shopping. £1.74 saved off the budgeted £60 so that's been sent to the everyday CC - this is 0% and actually not included in my signature, but we have about £1k on it, maybe I should add it on I guess. Plan is just to pay this off little and often with extras saved from budgeted amounts.

Moved the tumble drier out ready for H-tpoint to collect and replace tomorrow. Have decided this will go into the garage now as this month we are buying the back door (have decided to get a wooden stable door for it and then DH will fit, which means new door, but money saved on the labour.

Then had the brainwave of turning the kids storage units sideways to give them more floor room - they are the kallit? ones from IKEA so can go either way, so DH is just fixing them to the wall and I'm just about to start dinner - standing pasta pie! Never done it before, but surely I can't ruin that.

Still no movement on cashback, surveys all quiet. Sorted out how to get tax refund for car, should be £50 ish and will ring the insurance tomorrow, hopefully it won't take all of the £50 and I might have a little extra to fling at the CC's.

  • Have you tried Liddly shopping?

Sooo much cheaper than Mr T.

I thought about it, but i am fatal when let loose in a supermarket, online I can control to the penny what I buy, plus Liddly is 20 miles away and with working five days, I don't want to spend precious family time trawling round a supermarket.

If one was much closer and I didn't live in the middle of nowhere, I might.. if only they did home delivery!

I swear by Aldi for quality and price. It's so fast paced you need a list and a plan! Much less likely to overspend because there are no tempting offers. It's worth thinking about. It saves us a fortune.

I don't even know where our closest @ldi is, so that means it's got to be over an hour away at least in one of the big cities, would lose any savings in fuel. Seriously you send me to a supermarket for a loaf of bread and I'd spend £20! I know it's a weakness of mine, hence why I avoid them as much as possible or take DH with me! :rotfl:
