Where do SORN vehicles have to be parked?

  • We believe it has been left there on purpose.

Bit of background. The road has two schools on it. Opposite side has double yellow lines all along the length. Other side has parking bays (not marked for residents only or anything). The houses that do have drives on the side which has the parking bays have a I
I marking to say to leave clear. All apart from this house and one other. This house has a dropped kerb but no keep clear marking.

Needless to say at school run times, cars were parking (completely legally if a bit inconsiderately) across this driveway. My friend and her OH are making the assumption that this household have got racked off with this. Residents have made complaints to at least one of the schools but as it has been pointed out to them, the parking spaces are not marked for residents only, therefore anyone who likes it can park there legally.

This van appeared in October, and it blocked off access to the driveway of this house, and the occupants park their two other cars in the spaces adjacent (which they are perfectly entitled to do), taking up three spaces in total and leaving less spaces for the other residents who do not have driveways. A couple of other vehicles are left overhanging the road but they are on the pavement approaches to driveways marked with the keep clear lines.

I am just glad I don't live there!

As a school governor, parking was always a hot issue.

It's amazing how many parents drive and park inconsiderately around the school - including being on handheld phones, blocking zig zag lines - and then complain that it was too dangerous for their children to walk to school!!!!

Meanwhile the children who did walk, found that parked cars were blocking sight lines, failed to give way, were driving excessively quickly etc.

    Pic needed, I think.

If it's on their property, it's legit.
If it's on their property bar a short overhang onto the pavement, it's unlikely anything will be done.
If it's not on their property, then I'd expect the council to regard it as an abandoned vehicle, sticker it as such, then remove it for crushing.

It'd be easy to trace the VIN via DVLA, but whether that comes back to anybody who admits to having anything to do with it being parked there (in return for a court date for an uninsured, unroadworthy vehicle etc)...

If I can take a pic next week, I will. My friend and her OH don't want any trouble from this family if at all possible. They would have to declare any disagreements when moving house.

The car is parked about three foot outside the edge of their property line, on the approach to their driveway so I suppose it is on the footpath or verge.

It may not even belong to them as such but I cannot see them putting up with someone else having dumped it, and them having to park on the roadside when they have a perfectly good driveway. A lot of thought appears to have gone into this.

Easy. Pop the bonnet (easy enough externally, especially with the bumper removed) and find the VIN plate. Or get the door open, forcibly if needed once it's been towed, and remove whatever's covering the visible IVN.

True, but that doesn't help the OP get it removed, only helps the remover find out who owns/owned/abandoned it.

Indeed. But if it's not on private land, the only way to get it shifted is to report it to the council as an abandoned vehicle. Repeatedly, loudly, if necessary.

    Absolutely. I think that's what's been suggested.

This set me thinking - when is a car a car, and when is it a pile of junk?....
If it is no longer enough of a car to be a car, then it could be classed as litter so you can get done either way if it is left on the road or pavement.

Sorry officer, the litter bin wasn't big enough for the remains of my car. :D
