Can't believe people are stupid enough to use these services when they could look it up for free. Have they not heard the extortionate rates even stated in these directory service companies ad campaigns?

Too late for advice to the OP, but for other readers:

Never let directory services connect a call for you, as even after they've gone you are still being charged for ringing their number.

They can send the search result as a text message; you don't even need to keep talking long enough while they read it out and you write it down.

When Ovivo was still running, there was an occasion I needed some numbers urgently but had no mobile internet connection to check online. I managed to call directory enquiries 3 times for 4 numbers, all from the original £5 that came on the SIM.

Same a few years ago when needing a choice of the nearest tyre places. £3 on an O2 bill.

There are still free directory enquiries available if you look. Really no need to pay at all.

The problem appears to have occurred because op asked BT DQ to connect him to BT sales instead of calling them direct.

Useful article about Free DQ services here http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/phones/directory-enquiries-free
Your see a warning in it about Call Completion.

Especially as 99% of phone numbers are available online via a quick search.

In this circumstance, why not call a friend or anyone else in your address list and ask them to find the number for you?

I just phoned BT, and this is no longer current. The offer was only up until January 2012 /13 I think she said. They will no longer refund costs because they have now written (apparently) their costs on all written info about BT!! The prices are extortionate, disgusting! 50p plus £2.30 odd for each minute!! We've just been billed £17 for 6 mins apparently WHICH didn't happen! Who takes 6 mins to ask for a obtain a number ? Liars! Don't ever use the 118500 it's a massive theft of your money. :(

Whoever posted this comment should have realised the fine was issued and instructions to refund the customers in Jan 2014 which is way after 2012/13
It's not just about the money

Not rocket science, seeing as some DQ calls now cost up to £5 a minute!!
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂
