EON smart meters

  • Hi Malc,
Can you please advise me. I am renovating 2 flats in what was previously a house. We are having gas connected to both properties in February. We are looking to get meters installed. We would ideally like to get prepayment tariffs for both meters as we don't want to be liable for any debts. Is this something that EON would provide for properties that we are not living in. Also is there a installation fee and charges if our tenant later decided to change the way they pay for their gas and would it be possible to install a smart meter providing we live in the right area? Many thanks :)
  • I had a Smart meter fitted on the 1st May 2015.
The blurb says that it only takes 30 minutes per meter to install.
What they don't mention is the installation engineer goes through everything to check that it that it's up to safety spec.
In my case the gas flue needed to have mastic applied or he would cut off my boiler. Luckily I had mastic a ladder and the knowledge to do it. Next the gas fire in the living room had to be checked that the correct vents had been fitted (which they were).
Being safety couscous I this wasn't a big issue for me, however the fitter mentioned that he had cut of the supply for several people recently (worth noting).
Once installed the fitter went through explaining the display and one of the buttons didn't work. He said that he couldn't just change it for a display that worked as it syncs with the meters. He said I should wait 24 hours and if the button didn't work to call the number on the instructions that he gave me.
The next day the button obviously still didn't work.
I called the number which had changed, so had to find a pen take down the number and phone again (you would have thought that you would be an automatic transfer).
When I finally spoke to an operator I was told that to get a new display would mean that I would need new meters to be fitted.
You would have thought that a phone app that was able to sync by Bluetooth would have been cheaper.
So now another fitter is going to call next week to fit new meters. The one I have at present is colour I understand from the fitter that the new ones are not.
Finally if you move power companies the smart meter will no longer work as a smart meter. You would have thought that the government would have ensured that they are transferable when you move power companies.

It will be fine, and will revert to a "dumb " meter status the minute you switch supplier. You need a new meter anyway so may as well have one.Chuck the in house display monitor in a drawer when the novelty wears off. Don t forget to claim compensation (only £25 ) if the meter fitter does nt turn up

Thanks, I was worried that I'd suddenly see increases in bills and some people are adamant that their new meters are over charging!
Main reason I signed up was due to meter reader always getting the wrong reading from my electric (very old style) meter especially when pointer was right on a number.

    Hi Spikel

The Smart Meter will be a straight replacement for the existing meter. It'll continue to record your usage as before but will send readings to us via electronic messages rather than someone having to read the meter. We will, though, continue to call every so often to make sure everything's safe and accurate.

At the moment, as sacsquacco says, the meter will need to go back to being read manually if you change supplier. Everything else will just about stay the same. You'll only pay more if you use more energy or if the tariff changes. There's quite a bit of stuff on our website that might be of interest. This includes a short film and quite a few Frequently Asked Questions.

Hope this helps put your mind at ease Spikel. Let me know if you've any further concerns.
