EON smart meters

I've just moved to Eon and they are offering to fit new gas and electricity smart meters for free.

Has anyone had these fitted and is there much in the way of benefits ?
Any issues ?
Cheers

The benefit is that you will not have to provide meter readings and your bills should always be 100% correct. You will also have a display to use in your home that will give real-time information about your usage, and possibly store some historical usage too.

Downsides are that it will probably stop working as a smart meter if you switch supplier, and that it may be converted to a prepay in the event that you do not pay your bills.

Some users here will soon be along to tell you that they are evil, and that they are responsible for a whole host of bad things ranging from letting burglars into your house while you are away to giving cancer to young children.
  • Well its a new meter, and a new meter is required anyway so it may as well be a superior smart meter rather than the rubbish little £20 Ampy type digital meter which belongs in the last century. Take the meter, unplug the monitor if it bothers you and carry on as you are knowing that at least your direct debits will be calculated properly with no nasty surprises.. and dont believe the utter guff about them which circulates on here.. Also another excellent byproduct is that no scruffy muddy booted meter reader will be knocking you up at 8 am on your day off and lie-in day

    Hi Daz2009

We've been fitting Smart Meters for a few years now and are aiming to offer them to all our residential customers by 2020. Thought it might help if I give you a bit of information about them.

Smart Meters send us readings via remote messages that pass between the meter and us. This cuts down on the number of visits we need to make and saves you the hassle of sending us readings. We will, though. still call occasionally to make sure all is safe and well.

The information from the meter helps keep bills/payment arrangements accurate.

As Istar337 says, they come with an Energy Display to keep you in touch with how much energy you're using and to help customers better understand where the energy's going. Hopefully, this will help save money by saving energy.

If you decide to go ahead, the technician installing the meter will set it up and show you how it works. They'll leave instructions too. These are also available on our website and can be downloaded if needed.

Installations take about an hour for each fuel. During this time, the power will need to be off for approx 30 minutes. Once done, the technician will take away the old meters and any old energy displays you want rid of.

The technician will need clear access and will ask you to turn off and unplug all sensitive equipment. They'll also do a visual inspection of any gas appliances.

There's more information about the meters and the displays on our website including an online demo.

Like all new technology, there's certain teething problems. For instance, the meter sends us messages remotely via technology similar to that used by mobile phones. Sometimes, the signal isn't strong enough and messages don't come through.

Also, if you change supplier, meters may not work as smart with another provider. Depending on the supplier, they may not be able to receive reads and meters will revert to the same kind of meter you have now. We're working to iron out these issues.

Hope this is of interest Daz2009. Let me know if you need any more details as happy to help.

    Hi mackemps3

Hope my post above in reply to Daz2009 is of interest to you too?

As I say, the plan is to offer Smart Meters to all our residential customers by 2020. At the moment, we're talking to customers in various areas and with different metering set ups. We're looking to hit the million mark for installations by the end of this year.

We'll definitely be in touch with the offer of a Smart Meter. Can't say when, though. It depends on the region and your particular metering set up.

If you haven't already, you can register an interest through our website. We'll be in touch to let you know what the situation is. Alternatively, if you phone us, our advisors will register your interest and this will be picked up by our Smart Meter specialists.

Hope this is useful mackemps3. Let me know if you need any more information as happy to help.

    That's another untruth.

I get that you are in favour of Smart Meters, but at least be honest about their benefits.

Well no one takes much notice of my true beliefs re smarts so a focus on their other virtues makes a change. They re honest enough reasons for having one though.

In the end you've got to have a meter and it doesn't really matter whether it's dumb, smart red, green or blue.

There are probably benefits in having a smart one insofar as you should get up to date accurate billing and therefore no surprises especially if you are the sort who ignores or doesn't bother to check bills.

It's unlikely that they will fry your brain or cause the local swag man to pop round because he's worked out that you haven't turned the light on by reading your meter data.

If you swap suppliers and the meter becomes a dumb one again, so what, it's still a meter and will still measure & record the energy passing through it. It will just have to be manually read and you'll be back to estimated bills again if you don't bother to get them corrected so you are no worse off.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

That's my big gripe - is that the energy companies haven't yet got their act together and made these interchangeable. Until they do, WE are paying to have meters changed, replaced & replaced again.

Such a pointless & expensive waste of resource.

Only real benefits are possibly not having to supply meter reads, having a nice new display to play with and be able to see your consumption.

    Disadvantages..
If you change supplier no data flows to new supplier and tarrifs are not updated on your display

If you have meter problems ,most Gas Emergency DNOs do not have contracts in place/deal with smart meters.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
