Barclays Cash Card Account

I've just applied for a current account with Barclays but my application was declined by them just like it was with Santander when i applied to them.

I currently have a Lloyds current account and a Halifax current account. I get paid into my Lloyds account from work and my direct debits come out of that same account other than my o2 direct debit which comes from my halifax account.

As many have on here, i've had trouble in the past with payday loans. Both my Halifax and Lloyds accounts have had payments taken from them by payday loan companies. I'm now, thank god out of the deep with the payday lenders. Theres still some showing on my credit record which are stating amounts that are miles more money than i actually owe them. But those i'm having trouble with are just not cooperating at all. They don't respond to any letters or emails from myself offering them to settle up. I do believe they have closed down now or rebranded as they no longer have websites and the phone numbers etc don't work when i contact them (not that i'd like to speak to them on the phone, i prefer to keep everything in writing) so it looks like i'm stuck having them on my credit report... It's very odd... They don't ever call me requesting the money or even send me any letters in the post. They've been on my credit report since 2011. I really don't feel comfortable with my bank accounts and all of these companies having access to them.

I want a new bank account, a fresh, clean, new account that has nothing to do with any of these loan companies at all.

Anyway. About the Barclays Cash Card Account... I know it's a basic account, i have a similar cash card account that's linked to my Lloyds account but with that cash account i only have a card that i can use in a cash machine, it's not a visa card etc just a basic account that i can keep money in and withdraw from the cash machine.

When Barclays just knocked me back for a normal current account they offered me the Cash Card account and my application has been submitted for that type of account. They said if i'm accepted for that they will send me the account info and a welcome pack in the post. So i'm keeping my fingers crossed that they will give me the basic account.

I just have a few questions about this account, if anyone has this account or has any info on it i'd greatly appreciate you sharing with me what the account is like. I'd like to know the following...

* Would i be able to use the card linked to the account to pay for things in shops or buy things online?

* Would i be able to have my direct debits changed to this account so my phone bill, contact lenses etc get taken from this account?

* Would i be able to get my pay from work paid into this account?

* Would i be able to transfer money from the account to my friends bank accounts with different banks, for example if i owe them money for anything.

* Would i be able to use the debit card abroad? I travel a lot. Usually to the USA and Canada so i'd need to be able to use the card when i'm away, not that it'd be the primary source of spending when i'm away, just incase of any emergency where i've ran out of dollars and need to make a withdrawal when i'm away

The Barclays website states that the card i can have from them can be a "cash card" like what i have from Lloyds where i can just take cash out of a machine. Or i can have a Visa Debit card for this account. Obviously i'd want the Visa debit card.

Honestly this type of account is exactly what i would like to have anyway. No overdraft or fee just for the privilege of having an account or any of the extras like mobile phone insurance and travel insurance etc. Just a basic bank account that i can get paid in to from work, pay for things in shops or online. My cash card account with Lloyds would be fine but they don't give a visa card so i'm limited to just withdrawing money from ATM machines.
This is a link to the barclays website about the account but like i say it doesn't give much info really, i'm looking to be able to do all of the above questions.

So if anyone has any info they can share on this account i'd be very grateful because the Barclays account doesn't really go into much detail.

Sorry for such a long post and thank you for taking the time to read it!

Thanks for the quick reply. Can you use the card in shops with the chip and pin do you know?

Thats all im really after, a basic bank account without an overdraft but banks keep knocking me back for normal current accounts.

Yes, it comes with chip and pin and you can do online banking as well. I was also declined a main current account but offered this instead - probably because I had some old defaults on my file which have now dropped off - they have now given me a Barclaycard which I was also declined for when I applied so my score with them must be improving.

I would recommend it, I haven't had any problems at all.

    Good luck

Thanks so much for answering that. I hope they approve me, my parents have banked with Barclays for years and they've always seemed to be a pretty reliable bank. Like i say, i'm more than happy to have a basic account, its all i need right now. Somewhere to keep my money safe without the worry of companies having my details and having access to my account. But at the same time a card where i can only withdraw cash at a machine is no good for me, i guess as a sort of savings account it would but as an everyday bank account it just wouldn't work.

If push comes to shove and Barclays don't accept me ill just have to get Halifax and Lloyds to give me a new account number and send out new cards.

I really need a credit card to help improve my credit rating but if barclays won't even give me a current account i've got no chance of getting a credit card with them. The only people who i know will give me a credit card is Capital One and the likes of Vanquis.

I'd only ever use the card for the likes of petrol and pay the bill off at the end of the month. I don't need one in the sense my wage is not enough to live off.. it would simply be for the purpose of boosting my credit rating

Hi mate I am in the know for you I work at Barclays.

Basically because you have had payday lending history, regretfully our credit process takes a dim view for scored products and that includes current account.

I would not worry that much, because yes you can do everything you wanted to as written in bold in your post with the cash card account with visa debit. :)
In fact the only thing you cannot do is add authorised overdrafts or have chequebooks or contact less card option in these accounts. It recently been improved so you have full access to our features store as well with cash card account.

You should be accepted for cash card account. If you are not then there must be something seriously affecting your application with regards to what type of information is on your credit file and any other databases searched.

You should seriously consider having regular payments (ie electronic salary) going into a full current account rather than the basic one as your credit score will improve, in the future if you want to take out mtg, loan etc with the full current account. You should seriously consider leaving your oldest current account open, as the length of time with this bank will be seen positively on your credit file.

You don't need a full current account to get a credit card. If you have a basic account and have your salary (electronically) or a standing order coming in there I.e mandated then usually youd would be accepted for a credit card for people like your self who want to improve credit history. We would be able to tell you before proceeding to full application on you chances of acceptance and the range of cards on offer. This is in branch channel. Online, telephone will have a different range of card options that may not include the mandated salary one.

    Hope this help you:D

You need to check your facts. Some Cash Card customers (myself included) have received contactless cards on request.

For some reason my Barclays card cash account came with a debit card which is used in the normal way. Online purchases, store purchases, the lot. I can't tell the difference between this and the Standard Current Account I now have. They wrote to me to say it's been upgraded but nothing changed at all.
