ultrasound scans- getting it wrong?

i am 28 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child. we were told at 20 weeks that we were having a boy, but for some reason i am terrified that the hospital got it wrong! we have bought everything with a little boy in mind, and i am sooo scared that he will come out and turn out to be a she- does this actually happen a lot or am i just stressing for no reason at all?

From my experience of having babies, they only give you a strong suggestion of what sex the baby is,rather than a guarantee.
With my first we wanted a surprise,I was sure it was going to be a girl, and it was a boy! I had the 2nd only 15 months later,so wanted to know if I needed to buy girly stuff as well. We decided to find out, when we went for the scan his willy was so prominent I was glad I hadn't wanted another surprise! By the time we had the third I was desperate for a girl( much as I love the boys!)so I really wanted to know so I could get used to the idea if it was going to be another boy, because realistically I would of been initially disappointed, but wanted to have time before the birth to get over that. She was a girl,I thought girls would be calmer gentler, quiter etc than the boys, but she is definitely even more of a handful than the boys!
Any way all in all I think if they say your having a boy,it is most likely correct, sometimes they my say its a girl because the scan has been at the wrong angle to see the penis. This maybe completely wrong but thats the way I've always assumed.
    Good luck with it all.

Before Ultrascans etc, there was a doctor that could tell you the sex of your child no problem. He charge £50, and guaranteed he would get it right.

You would go see him, and he could guarantee he would always be right. So many couples went to see him. Anyway, what he did is always said the child would be a boy, so would tell the couple it would be a boy. Anyway, her always wrote in his book that it would be a girl.

9 months later, if a boy was delivered then the couple were happy, and the prediction was right. However if it was a girl, they would go see the doctor. The doctor then would check his notebook, and show them that he had in fact written down that it would be a girl.

    How clever :)

In regards to your ultrasound scan, ive tried googling but couldn't find anything.

But at least you know if the doctors have got it wrong, then they may still be able to prove to you that they got it right :D

Good luck, hope it is the right predicted gender

Is there any reason you are terrified they got it wrong?

Yes they can be wrong. I have cared for people as a midwife whose babies have been sexed wrongly. What needs to be bourne in mind that USS are a diagnostic test to determine fetal wellbeing, the sexing being secondary to this.

would it be so bad if they did get it wrong?

A baby is a miracle whether it's a boy or girl.

Yes, As a midwife I have had them come out different to what the parents thought they were going to be. Although is quite rare where I work (I've personally delivered 2 in 6 years) - The last one being two weeks ago when they were told it was a girl and it turned out to be a boy! Shock all around!

Inkie is right - its a diagnostic test and sex is secondary and we NEVER say its absolutely certain that its a girl or boy but that it POSSIBLY looks like one sex and warn that it maybe different. Chances are that it will be a boy, but just accept the lovely surprise if it does turn out to be a girl.

  • I've only heard of people being told it was a girl, then having a boy (shy at the scan) but not heard of it the other way around - though I suppose it happens now and then.

They told me I'm having a boy at my 20 week scan too :j and I had another private scan at 26 weeks - I started to get paranoid that they'd say it's a girl, but they didn't, just confirmed what the hospital said.

If they were both wrong then baby has no clothes, or even a name! :)
  • its not very mse but if your really worried, then book yourself a 4D scan
if you have seen the pics then you know how detailed it all is and there will be no mistaking the genitalia,

we are having ours a week tomorrow and we cant wait :j :D

my SIL is 6 weeks ahead of me and at her 20 week scan they were told that the MW was 80% sure its a girl, now if that was me i wouldnt have been buying all pink stuff....but everyone is different
    (just keep all the reciepts!)

hi, we had a 4d scan and they said was a girl, we have had two more since then (due to blurry face pics but MSE style we only paid once!) and each time i have asked if sheis still a girl! so was told at 26 weeks, 30 weeks and 34 weeks. this time i got a picture printed out of her "girly bits" not for showing off but for when i get paranoid they mightbe wrong!
however, airing on the side of caution we have bought neutral things such as moses basket, pram etc but some little pink outfits 0 but they can be exchanged or given away without much cost.

i must admit i will be very very shocked if i have a boy but as long as the baby was healthy i would be over the moon at my little miracle regardless ............. roll on the next 5 weeks i say!!!!

thank you to all of you who responded to me having a neurotic moment!

i had my 28 week scan today and i did ask the sonographer if she was sure it was a boy and her response? 'definately a boy, look there's his balls!' ok then!

i would very much love to have a 4d scan but its a bit beyond my budget unfortunately.

it wouldnt have been the end of the world at all if she had said to me that the previous lady got it wrong and i was having a girl, i am happy as long as my baby is healthy its just that everything i have so far is for a boy, and if we had a girl i dont think she would be too impressed at being called connor!

i was just having a stressing moment- pregnancy hormones, what can i say!
    thanks again all xx

hi again, dont know where you live but our scan was in nottingham and was only £85 for the DVD, lots of pictures and CD of all pictures. the face pictures were blurry as baby wouldnt move her face so they invited us back again for another try - twice! well worth the £85, we have an album of scan photos now!!
