UK deficit = around 5% of UK GDP
Scotland deficit = around 10% of Scottish GDP
Now, I know you like to proclaim that it's politics rather than economics that controls things, but lets be honest, you have form on getting these things wrong.
This would probably be a good time to remind you of your thoughts on Syriza and Greece....Shakethedisease wrote: »Since you are so fond of Greece, then you only have to see what's happening there. The new politics there is dictating the economics of Europe.
Except of course, it isn't.
Greece has a similar deficit position to Scotland for years... then had crippling austerity forced on them by the markets and their creditors to reverse that and run a primary surplus.
The cost of that was unemployment of 26% and youth unemployment of 50%. (UK unemployment with our 'austerity' is just 5.6%)
Greece then elects a left wing socialist government determined to end austerity and increase minimum wages and pensions.
Look what happens to the interest rates Greece pays to borrow.....
Crippling.
Worse now with Syriza than it was in the global financial crisis.
Politics does not trump economics Shakey....“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

We factor all these things in you know, and we can also read. Difficulties ahead for Scotland and the UK with deficits. FFA or status quo.. large deficits seem to be looming large for years yet anyway.
ps didn't Brent crude rise today ? Volatile stuff.
Well Scotland's deficit is twice the size of the UK's in relative terms. In fact FFA would deliver a budget surplus to the rest of the UK before the end of the next Parliament all else being equal.
Of course the huge flood of Scottish people heading south for medical treatment and education as the SNP had to slash services as a result of their own very stupid policy would probably negate much of the savings.
Another 20 record weeks of increases in the price of oil and FFA becomes viable once again.0 -

Well it might, if it weren't for those pesky little things best described as 'facts'.THE Scottish Government's huge £444m underspend is an absurd waste of resource and opportunity
And....Accounts have emerged showing that the Scottish Government has underspent £92 million on Justice, £10 million on the Procurator Fiscal Service, £102 million on Infrastructure and a whopping £165 million on Education.
“The SNP have blamed all the cuts ...... on Westminster, and yet they had close to half a billion pounds left to invest.”
The SNP might have a bit more credibility had they not deliberately under spent by hundreds of millions of pounds in a cynical, authoritarian and deceitful attempt to centralise power while blaming Westminster for Scottish cuts.
There was simply no need for the controversial and failed experiment to demolish local accountability in Police and Fire services through centralising power in Scotland.
Not when it now emerges this was a political stunt to appease the authoritarian SNP, who under-spent their budgets by half a BILLION pounds.
Self-serving, shallow, cynical, deplorable, political gamesmanship.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

Hosie, Swinney and Sturgeon are attempting to play down Scottish concerns over FFA, by suggesting it will take years for this to be negotiated and happen. Meanwhile Salmond suggests it will be FFA under the Smith commission rule of 'no detriment'. Any loss or disadvantage incurred by Scotland during the transition years will be covered by UK. FFA didn't form part of the Smith commission, as I understood it.?
Which contradicts what Salmond suggests in his 'book'. There he recommends FFA being achieved in a single piece of legislation, for ease and speed, with an adjusted Barnett for a single year to cover transition. In his book his concern is whether the 'no detriment' rule inferred Scotland having to pay money to UK if Scotland prospered.
In addition Sturgeon has said increased borrowing powers underwritten by the UK will form part of the negotiation process.
for FFA. This was in response to being questioned on her economy growth claim.
Spin ,double spin and treble spin from SNP IMO. Is England falling for SNPs friendship offer, like Natalie Bennett and Leanne Wood have?0 -
So the SNP want FFA plus a massive slug of cash from London and the SE? They want the English to provide a free hedge against falls in the price of oil.
I can see why it's a popular policy with the Scots although I suggest that it would last exactly as long as it takes for the English to find out about it.
It reminds me of Mrs Generali's attitude to property: what's mine's hers and what's hers is hers too.0 -
Criminy it's tight. According to the Beeb Lab and Con are neck and neck. But the nazi party are the largest fringe group with 14 points. If we end up with Farageron this time around I am joining the Resistance.
Ed will need every angry nationalist Scotsman to climb into bed with him in May. I am crossing everything for a Sturgeband coalition in number 10. What a wheeze that would be!0 -
So the scots really do want to have their cake and eat it!
If Scotland becomes independent then maybe we can ensure they will need passports to get into this country for medical treatment - and charge them several thousand pounds to cross the border.
Whatever all the politicians blather about if Minibrand gets in then the fish will control him, scots will become independent if they want to or not, and we will finally be free of the noose that is the double serving of fish.
We do need to ensure that they realise they will be cut off though, no more generous pourings of money into the pot, that way we might actually be able to afford to run what will be left of the UK. Oh, and they need to pay to rebuild Hadrians wall. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -

Save this for the election it's relevant to.. which is May 2016. These are all devolved matters that MSP's vote on. Not reserved matters that MP's do. So are irrelevant in terms of the election of MP's to Westminster right now.
Scottish Labour's been trying this for months. Fighting the wrong election.. ( like they did in 2011 ). Might be better concentrating on issues that actually matter for an election in 19 days ?It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?0 -

Rubbish. The SNP should fight on their record especially as they plan to be Kingmakers in Parliament.0
