That would make no difference whatsoever, it is not their fault that you were away for part of the timeframe allowed to inspect the item

There is no 14 days inspection time relating to the SOGA. There is a 14 day period for the Consumer contract regulations but this is just the time you get for informing the retailer of your desire to cancel the contract under those regulations.

As previously mentioned by others, all that the SOGA refers to is "a reasonable time" and this can be anywhere from a few days to a few weeks depending on the type of goods concerned.

With regard to the keyboard, after having problems with the keyboard i then found numerous complaints about it, would this not show that there is clearly a problem, it is not just my inability to type on it? Would this not demonstrate the device was not fit for purpose?

No. It would just show that a (small) number of people can't get to grips with that type of keyboard, and they went online to comment about this.

There may well be a far bigger percentage of people who can use it just fine ... people tend to post complaints on the internet rather than positive views, so such research carries little merit.

Not necessarily, I searched for over sensitive dell keyboard and the only results that came up were actually people having an over sensitive touchpad causing the cursor to jump around and there is software installed to adjust this to suit your needs. This was based on a generic search though and not on the exact model so those results may be different.
