Ring the utility company, give the correct reading, and pay the finalbill based on that.
If the utility company queries the reading, or the new owner sends in a different 'opening' reading, ask the utility company to go and do an accurate reading.

Yes, I have spoken to Utility company and have asked for final bill for the known readings. That will be paid.
The Utility company advisor in question stated that they are not always able to get engineers out to read meters as regularly as they'd like to, and so rely on customers providing accurate and honest readings. Well in this case something is falling short of that isn't it.
'That' is the issue.
I am trying to get this wrapped up, as trouble free as I can, and this sort of crap just doesn't help. It only takes a moment to get this right, and, while I could and in reality "should" have obtained final readings in late December, at that time of year, running my own business and having numerous other issues within my life means I foolishly overlooked it.
All I have asked for is for the new owners to provide simple truthful readings. I am not asking for a lot, just some integrity.0 -
which we cannot provide here. I'm afraid we have no influence over the new owners.
Ring utlity company again and insist on a meter reading.0 -

Ring utlity company again and insist on a meter reading.
Yes, I am aware no one has influence over new owners.
Have been in contact with Utility company already. They cannot raise a visit to read the meter, as the house now belongs to someone who is "not" their customer.
What I was looking for from this thread were others views regarding the actions of the new owners, and whether those actions could be getting into the realms of fraud, should it be proven they provided deliberately misleading readings.0 -
If anybody could prove it, yes it's fraud - but from what we know so far, I can't see the police taking an interest.0
