Is it worth updating our Sky Router for another (better) router?

log in to your sky account on line and see what they say you should be getting. We have had issues before where they capped the line as it had a minor fault on it.0

You should know that only sky routers can be used on Sky ADSL. You cant just go buy one in the shops because it wont work. Sky have their own embedded software in their supplied routers.
Most routers have no issues serving out data to all its connected users especially in the average home.

OK congrats on doing the speedtest. The results are quite frankly awful !
So the next thing is to find out what you SHOULD be getting.
Go to this page and click on Postcode Checker
https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/
The highest number at the top left is the best you can hope for on copper.
BT normally supplies the copper lines so that is why its the BT checker.
If the answer is over 3Mb then your installation is bad or there is a fault.
If the answer is pretty much the same or a little higher then you need fibre.
I would suggest you need 2Mb per person (online at the same time) or better as an absolute minimum.
OP - do you know if you can get fibre? speed is around 2 - 3 mbs and unfortunately I cannot fibre. There was however a fault in my line which BT came out and fixed, and at least now I am getting near the 3, I had to threaten to leave sky to get a good router as wellWeight loss challenge, lose 15lb in 6 weeks before Christmas.0 -
The problem might be the router or more likely you just have a slow broadband connection.
You need to do a speed test. This one allows you to compare the speed to other people in your area.

It is better to plug your computer directly into the router with the cable supplied with the router to exclude a slow wifi link. Then repeat using a wifi link to see if your wifi is slowing things down where you need to use it.
If the wifi is bad then maybe a new router - but you will need one that works with sky.
If the broadband is just slow then maybe consider fibre BB.
It's no good doing that, the ISPs got wise and started to allow more bandwidth to the speed test websites, whist throttling everything else, so that when people test their connections they see amazing results (unless there is a fault).
OP, ISP supplied routers will do the job most of the time, the only reason to get something new would be if you needed specific settings/features that the ISP supplied router does not have.
I would suggest making sure the problem is not caused by anything else first. What EXACTLY is the issue?

I may be wrong in my assertion and i hope i am as i am a sky customer. That post refers to o2 users who were migrated to sky when sky bought them out last year. Those customers will have been in possession of an o2 supplied router.

If you read the thread you will see that subscribers who haven't migrated from O2/Be have also been able to get their third-party routers working without much difficulty using the router settings mentioned in the thread.0 -

Ok peeps
After reading all your helpful comments It's clear as day that the speed is awful and the service is rubbish. We phoned Sky up and they sounded like they weren't bothered. Therefore, we finished the call, searched the web and found that there is fibre in our street at 63MB (that speed is pretty much guaranteed when you input your phone number and postcode). So... Sky is history. We cancelled shortly after and have now gone with Plusnet.
So, thanks all.
Finally, obviously Plusnet will be supplying a router so I'll ask the original question... From the title again. Should we keep the router supplied by Plusnet or if rare to a better one?0 -
Good decision to switch. If Plusnet are giving you a router you may as well try it and see how it works, and if you still have problems come back and ask for more advice. I'm not sure if you can use an alternative router with Plusnet fibre, I use a BT router on my Plusnet broadband but it's not fibre so it could be different.0
