What free things can you recommend doing in January?

Hi all!

How's your January going so far? We know it can be a very long month financially and can be hard to get motivated when the weather's pretty grey.

To help how about combining forces to share ideas of free things to do this month so we all get bums in gear without it costing anything?

There's some inspiration and ideas for cheap things to do already in our MSE Deals.

  • There are often free talks which can be a way of learning about something different.
It's part of my new year's resolution to do something new each month, preferably free or at least very cheap!

Last week I went to a talk by our local historical society which was "So you think you know (insert city name here)". It was free for first time visitors, or a voluntary £2 donation towards hall hire.

The universities here do free public lectures - you apply for the tickets but free entry, for various topics (science, history etc). Try searching for "xxx university public lecture" - they're not always clearly signposted from the main page, I've been more successful finding them via search engines.

Our council run art gallery does free talks and seminars on various topics. Every week they do short talks on the current exhibits as well.

Concert Halls and Theatres may do free events, we are lucky to have free Live at Lunch concerts. In the summer there are musicians playing at the various bandstands around the city parks - a wide variety of musical genres.

There's an arts event for under 16's taking place in Llandudno this weekend that's mostly free, a few of the events have a charge of £1.

    It's called TAKE pART.

I'm going to be mending & sewing on buttons; and on Sunday I'll be making up spring greetings cards - Valentines, Easter, & birthdays on account of finding a quantity of pretty envelopes in the craft shop sale.
  • Thanks everyone! Keep them coming :)
