Shocked at monthly usage for gas
Comments
-
I've just used 311 kWh of gas in the past 3 days, 2780 kWh in the past month.
My heating is on from 08:00 to 22:30.
That is with gas warm air heating.
I wonder how much I would have used if I had a combi boiler and radiators?over 73 but not over the hill.0 -
Does the boiler keep on running to maintain the temperature constantly then? I assumed it would just switch back on if the thermostat then dropped later.
Very good, a promising career in engineering beckons.
The pump stays on a bit to cool the heat exchanger down: this is called over run. It uses up the residual heat for the radiators: might as well.
A proper industrial plant will compensate for the external environment as well, and increase heat when the outside temperature drops, because it "anticipates" the greater heat loss, so it puts in the heat BEFORE the chemicals get cold and spoils the product. A domestic boiler with weather compensation does something similar, but you need a boiler that was designed to do it, and you need to install an outside sensor.0 -
That sounds like a lot to me - I'm all electric but we've got a heat pump and used 113kwh of leccy in three days (heating & hot water) - however I suppose if you take the COP (about 3) into consideration that's about 340kw of heat.
Ours is on 24 hours a day, just setting back by 3 degrees overnight. Although when it's this cold (2 degrees at the moment) the thermostats kick in and out all night. The unit is very sensitive to temperature.
Our average since 1st Jan is 31kwh/day but that's for everything, heating, hot water, lighting, washing, drying TV etc = about £3.60 a day including standing charge on single rate tariffNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -

I can use the gas CH for 10hrs a day and it comes in about £3.50 per day, thats without standing charge or vat, and then electric on top as well.
Need to review my tarriff and insulation me thinks.:T0 -
I just want to make sure I am running the new boiler correctly hence asking questions. To answer all the above queries:
Prior to buying the new boiler in June 2013, I checked for cavity wall insulation etc. House is single brick therefore cannot have cavity wall insulation. Attic was converted to a bedroom in 2004, planning consent approved so I assume the insulation was the necessary thickness at that time. Nothing further can be done in the attic.
All doors and windows were double checked and are double glazed and extra insulation tape was put where draughts could be felt.
Ok, so new combi condensing boiler - a Remaya Avanti plus (24k I think) was installed June 2013. All radiators bar the one in the hall had trvs put on them and a thermostat was put on the hall wall. Plumber advised set trvs on max and leave them like this, so I did. However, the radiators in the bedrooms have been set lower to no 5. 2013 winter was the first use of the boiler and as everyone keeps saying, that winter was not too bad. I did not use as much gas as I am doing now. I also never noticed the boiler staying on after reaching the set temp on the thermostat last year.
Yesterday the boiler ran off the timer and reached 16d around 2pm after being on from around half 10. The temp was still at 16d until evening and in all that time, the boiler was still running, it did not switch itself off. I checked the screen, no error messages, bar pressure was fine, running between 1 and 2 in all this time. Is this usual please? I put the boiler back over to the timer at 7pm and it switched itself off as per the timer at half 9.
Trvs in the lounge and dining room are set to max (no 6) however these did cool down and were not as hot as usual.
Basically I just want to ensure the boiler running constantly as it did is correct and I don't need to call in the plumber?

Do you mean a Remeha Avanta Plus.
This might be of interest.

You should be able to disable the Pre-heat.
Hopefully, it's still in warranty, if anything else is wrong.0 -

Mine is £5.50 per day
On the standard co-op tariff but I'm waiting for the drops before I switch.
The cost is to be expected. I don't think its been that cold this year. I remember when it was -10c for quite a while, that month our gas bill was £220 per month.
£150-£220 is simply how much it costs to heat and cook in a 5 bed detached with 4 people and a good to average tariff rate over winter.0 -

Yes, that is the one, thank you for that link, I will look into it.
Just done this month's reading and gas usage came out at 1544 kw.0 -
