Shocked at monthly usage for gas

Just had my statement for a months gas usage and I've used 1513 kw which is really high for me. 18 Nov - 18 Dec.

Is this a usual amount for others or have I just gone over drastically?

The thermostat is set at 16 and is on a timer from 5pm to 9pm and apart from the odd day, it has not been overridden.

That is about my monthly usage in winter but my heating is on pretty much from 7am to 10pm everyday apart from when out, set at 18c.

But you don't say what type of boiler you have or how old it is.

Or how big is the house, could have seven bedrooms etc.

Or how big your house is. 1513 over 30 days may not be that much at all. The 4 hours you have your heating on the boiler will be running constantly. Splithru's boiler would run constant for a few hours in the morning then top up during the day. Leaving heating on all day does use more...but the annual debate is that it isn't that much more.

You need to keep warm for your health. Only young healthy adults can handle living in cool houses. The living room temperature should get to around 20 and your bedrooms about 16. Try and cut your expenses down elsewhere.

Does the 1513 include hot water and cooking?

Really sorry, should have thought more info would be needed.

Its a 4 bed semi detached house, no cavity wall insulation or extra insulation as the 4th bed is in the attic.
7 radiators and the boiler was a brand new condensing combi in June 2013.
Yes it is gas for cooking and hot water plus a gas fire in the lounge. I don't do a huge amount of cooking, perhaps about every two/three days as I batch cook and use the slow cooker a lot. The gas fire is never on.

Just to add, the new thermostat for the boiler was put in my hall, which does become very cold. I noticed that both my dining room and lounge would easily reach 18-20dg when the hall thermostat still showed 16dg. (I have those ornamental temperature gauges in both rooms and the temp balls would drop to show the room temp)
I reduced the thermostat to 16 because this is all the other rooms needed to become warm.
But I have never used this much gas before.

An average of 50 kWh per day for a four bedroom house without cavity wall insulation sounds really good to me. Especially when you cook with gas and have a gas fire.

As you have a combi, it's probably a 24 kW model so 50 kWh per day is equivalent to running your boiler flat out for two hours.

Thanks very much for your reply. If that average sounds about right then that is a big sigh of relief for me. It is just much more than was used last winter.

I think I will still cut back on an hour though. I'm now wondering what Dec - Jan cost will be

We live in a Victorian 4 bed room house and our gas is 1kw a day for the Winter months. However we have open fires as well.

However heating is on only about 1-2 hours a day because of the coal fires.

My heating bill is infinitely larger this year as I did not need to use it at all last winter.
