Problems With Chess Telecom

I have a problem with Chess Telecom...I have been with them as a customer for many years so when I moved house and needed a new provider I had no issues with choosing Chess again....seemed like a good idea, I completed a recorded verbal agreement over the phone in September/October 2013, I honestly cannot remember whether I agreed a one or two year contract or something different altogether....anyway the service on this new account has been awful from day one, service issues, lack of contact, charges for excess internet usage which we believe we could never have reached, long wait times etc etc....so I made a decision that a soon as I was out of contract I would be moving to another provider, therefore when I received a letter from Chess dated 01.08.14 advising that my contract with them was due to expire on 15 January 2015 I was relieved that I could move away from them at that time, I have made arrangemnets to move and on the 24.12.14 rang Chess to request my MAC Code, the advisor told me that it would take five working days, so I waited and rang again yesterday to chase....I was then told by the advisor that my contract does not end until October 2015 and that if I leave I will be charged approx. £427.10 for the remaining term and also a line transfer fee which he could not tell me the amount...I tried to say that I have their letter n front of me advising that the contract ends on 15.01.15, he said it was a letter sent out in error and that it would have the letters EOS on it somewhere, it does not, now they have offered me a £40 credit for the internet charges they charged me and I would have to agree to a new 2 year contract, obviously I don't want to do this and still want to get away from this company ASAP....where do I stand and what are my rights? Surely if their letter advises me of the end date of contract then I have it in black and white....please any advice gratefully received.
