Im sure the carpenters of old would be horrified, Lost in Rates!
The blue and yellow shop furniture was bought when I was moving from furnished to unfurnished accommodation and had a short time frame.
There wasn't any spare furniture in the family to be passed on (v small family). In addition the b&y box was relatively cheap, and it has kept me well for over 5 years. To be honest I also thought it looked nice.
I have since realised that I prefer to find 2nd hand furniture for a number of reasons. I am slowly swapping items out as I find replacements which are second hand and better made, but only as and when I find the right item."Does it spark joy?" - Marie Kondo

Good Evening Everyone,
Spend most of the day sorting photo's. not in the correct order i know as i have only started my clothes, but DS was here yesterday and wanted something out of the attic so i told him and his dad to bring down a few boxes, the photos were one of said boxes.
I told DS that i had his hospital tags etc from when he was born (and all my other DS'S there is another 5). He said "get all that rubbish in the bin mum".
So it has been done. I think i will have to have a second go at the photos tomorrow before sorting out what i would like to keep.
To be honest i am not finding it too difficult, the thought of all our boys having to deal with it all when DH and I are no longer here really helps with this process.
Kondoing my handbags well thats a different story.

Good evening
I have been following the thread with much interest, and thought it time to call in and say hello.I have been folding, samosaing, sorting out and generally tidying, like lots of others im enjoying a little more space, and a few nicely tidied drawers.
I love it! How long before "samosaing' enters the OED? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

TOOTIES
I have baby tags too 35yrs old!!!
I'm going to show my sons them plus the baby teeth tin. See what they want me to do. I think I know the answer.... Bin
I couldn't sleep I have an eye procedure scheduled tomorrow
To prevent a more serious problem occurring and it has me a bit churned up. I'm normally quite ok with this sort of thing I'm a little toughun. somehow this has got me a tad nervous. I will be fine I'm looking forward to being spoilt by sons afterwards.
SO
I've been up hours sorting through my paper mountain
I've filled nearly a bin bag of papers, receipts and guarantees for stuff I no longer own.. Crazy
There's a pile to shred yuk hate that job I can take my time with ghat though. I think there is a market for industrial shredding machines at recycling centres. Those ones you buy are useless
I saw a hint somewhere to spray an A4 size piece of paper with wd40 then put it through the shredder. that oils the teeth to prevent it jamming.
My Dad used to make a sort of paper mâch! with his torn up confidential letters
He just used to put them in a bowl and steep in water for a bit.
Or have an after 6pm bonfire! That was an unwritten rule in the old days
Or face the wrath of housewives on washing day!!!
Anyhoo I've nearly finished the paper pile it's so satisfying.
I have resolved to deal with paperwork daily then file or discard once a week....say Sunday night.
I think I'd like to Kondo my time with a flexible routine
A blueprint say for certain tasks to be done on certain days.
I'm on the hunt now for photo albums to tackle the photos
My other nemesis!
Have a great day everyone”Pour yourself a drink, (tea for me now)
Put on some lipstick
and pull yourself together”

Just wanted to establish that I don't sneer at the IK!A and its like furniture (or its owners) because of its looks. When fresh and new it's pretty darned attractive and I can see the allure. A pal of mine has a houseful, she had to refurnish in a hurry with the insurance cheque after a house fire, and bought a truckload of the stuff.
What I dislike about it is its relative brevity in the good looks dept, and how it turns to landfill material after a generation or so. To me, it's a waste of precious resources and encourages us to think of things which should be long-lasting, such as furniture, as throwaway items.
My neighbour was telling me last week about an Argussy wardrobe which fell apart in under 6 months. He's decided to write it off to experience and not buy such stuff in future. I have an Argussy computer desk, bought secondhand about 12 years ago, which does the job, but which I may well switch out for a bureau when the pooter gets changed at some point in the future and I don't have a 21 kg CRT monitor and huge vertical pooter tower to accomodate.
LiR, I have a small rectangular table such as you speak of. It's pine but was pine stained dark, as was the fashion. My Nan bought it secondhand in her village during WW2. Cost £7 and 6 shillings. It has been in her home, at Mum's and now at mine. You can buy these little plank-top tables with turned legs for about £30 from time to time.
And I so agree with you about the large furniture. When browsing a secondhand dealer's warehouse out in the country, I was astonished at how cheap huge pieces, esp wardrobes and cabinets, were. He explained to us that this was supply-and-demand; they were coming out of big old houses but so many modern people only had small houses. There was a ferocious demand for smallish, useful bits of old furniture but he could barely give the huge pieces away.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I don't think anyone thought you were sneering at the Swedish style furniture. If they did well they haven't got you through your lovely funny posts. You come across a warm humorous but no nonsense lady.
I for one enjoy all points of view on here and we have been respectful of that.
It's why I subscribed. Everyone is different it would be boring if we weren't
There is a housing estate going up beside where I live right beside a lake where swans live they have had peace and quiet for years I hope the will be fine. The point is my neighbour an old school time served joiner
Worked on them for a while. He then left the site as the houses were being shoved up. He said he couldn't bring himself to continue producing such shoddy quick fix work. Yes they get inspected regularly but he said he wasn't comfortable with it. His son still works there but has a young family to feed so has no choice.
So I think it's rare to find good workmanship in much these days”Pour yourself a drink, (tea for me now)
Put on some lipstick
and pull yourself together”

Bureaus seem to come up for sale regularly round here - mostly in the newsagent's window, so keep an eye out (or get me to keep an eye out for you when you're ready to buy and you can relive your white-van days to collect!). The great thing about them is that there is plenty of storage space inside, and that you can shut the lid to hide work in progress. (and make more space).0 -
jinny: hope your procedure goes well today. Great tip about the shredder btw.
I was up until 1pm rolling socks - even sneaked into DS' room to get his & returned them all beautifully neat - he was slightly confused this morning!
I am working from home today - will need to control myself as I have a deadline. I figure though that since I don't smoke I'm allowed "kondo breaks" :-)Shifting my energy for 20200 -
Yesterday while listening to The Archers omnibus I sorted out my 'drawer of many things' in the kitchen. Everything is now itemised and in separate margarine tubs, and looks very nice and tidy. Things should be easy to find now. In a pullout cupboard in the kitchen I also had a 'basket of many things', so both are now condensed into the one drawer.
In the porch we have a shoe rack, and I've been asking family to sort out which shoes they really need to be downstairs. Unfortunately it's my DH and DD1 who are the main culprits. Both have about 8 pairs each on it. My pleas have fallen on deaf ears, so today I'll be taking them upstairs for them to sort out up there.
On Saturday I went and bought a metal filing box and have now managed to get my paperwork down from 5 lever arch files into the box, so that's going to save me a couple of hundred pounds because I don't need to buy a filing cabinet now! Lots of paper to be burned at the weekend though.0 -
Thank you Somerandom
I'm sure I'll be fine
I'm gonna milk the sympathy for all it's worth when back home he he
I have legal matter that's hanging over me as well. That is getting sorted today once and for all. It's funny the sorting and tidying especially the paperwork has made me less anxious about it.
I definitely feel in a good headspace.
Coincidence maybe but gotta be something in it.
Didn't listen to the full archers omnibus yesterday
And I'm just getting back into it from a good while ago
