One thing that has struck me, which cropped up early in the year, on MNet - the number of Konverts who are/were teachers! Do we have a 'special' clutter-gene? :(

When I was teaching, my desk top was always cluttered, and my lockable drawer, but my classroom was tidy. Yet, when I was a secretary, I loaded my desk in the morning and it was totally cleared by home-time! :o

    We had this quote:

"We have done so much, for so long, with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing.”

pinned up in the staffroom and I think the hoarding stems from that philosophy. So the nothing means being resourceful with anything you can acquire cheaply or for free to offset an ever dwindling budget. Then there's the need for a 'school uniform' separate from out of school clothes or everything smells of polish and disinfectant. And the fact that it's impossible to get all your work done on the premises so you need a set of resources at home. And.....

I now have an empty under bed drawer to put Christmas shopping in out of sight from kids lol

I hope no one minds me asking questions as they occur to me but I know lots of you are experts in MK.

I have a high bed with drawers underneath too and I also have a frilly/pleated valance around the bottom. I hate the thing especially as it gets caught in the drawers. I generally wash it in school holidays but haven't bothered this time as I plan to kondo it when the bedroom gets decorated. Do others have something smarter? Not bother?

And I put away two radiator airers still hanging around although all washing dried outside for months:o. The kitchen hand towel had started to live on one but that doesn't give me joy. I love my tea towels (mostly Cath Kidston or Emma Bridgewater) so happily hang those on handle of unit. What about kitchen towels. How do you store/display?

All I've done today is pack up 3 bags for the CS and now have to go out. I may get a bit more done later as determined to clear spare bed before bin day.

:D just remembered bin day is later this week because of Bank Holiday. Oh joy!!:rotfl:

I was in M&S outlet earlier buying new joyful and much needed (was on a list) long cardigan for work for the colder months and spotted some Xmas tags which I had to really stop myself from buying (70p for a pack of 6, £1 for 2 packs if anyone wants some) - they were white swing tags with 'joy' written on them in red loopy writing :D:D They'd go with plenty of paper I have (I tend to buy plain/ plainish papers so I can use any tags), but I know that I have way more tags than I'll need this year (and probably enough for the next 2 years, tbh) so I put them back.. Sigh...

:) Hi maman, if I had underbed drawers, I'd ditch the valance. Not necessary and just another annoyance and dust-gatherer.

I have a low-ish pine bedstead and, because of the smallness of the flat, the underbed area is a critically-important storage area. Also, unless I keep my bedroom door shut all the time, the side of the bed is in plain view of the front door.

Sooo, I felt I wanted to have a valance-type thing, but didn't want to have a full valance as its a PITA when I turn the mattress. And the other side and end of the bed are only a foot from their respective walls so not much point in valancing around there.

I picked up a chazzer valance in the same colour as my duvets and pillowslips, and cut it down to fit along one side of the bed. I cut the flat part of the valance (the bit which would be under the mattress) a few inches into the sheet, and turned it over a couple of times and machine stitched to make a hem.

Then I got some 1 inch long velcro strips, salvaged from something or other. I glued (uhu) the scratchy sides on the pine bed rail, one every foot, and the corresponding fluffy velcro was stitched onto the frill.

What this means is that the bed has a frill which looks like a valance, stops just short of the floor, but which can be removed wholly or partially to access the area underneath in seconds. It's also easy to launder and takes up much less space in the WM than a full valance.

When the bed is made, it looks just like a regular valance, and only took about 30 mins to do. Valance which I cut down was only 50p, too. HTH.

:D Just before we left for Big Market Town (BMT), Mum asked me what I was looking for in the chazzers and I mentioned a flan dish - she had one she didn't want and which was getting in the way and that has been given to me now. Bought nowt in BMT, but had a slice of cake and a cuppa bought for me in the community cafe. And I found 5p on the pavement, so it's been a cracker of a day thus far.

:o:p If you set your personal 'happiness bar' pretty low, the simplest things are delightful. And I am now cleared for takeoff for the 3rd and final coat of emulsion. Cats are still clear, but someone has somehow got some on the cooker..............:rotfl:

  • I have a divan bed, and can't stand how it looks without a valance. I use my underbed drawers almost daily - the nuisance factor is made up by the fact the cats love scratching the bed, but not the cotton valance = closer to joy that way round. It is an easier decision on a divan bed though.

It's purely personal taste I guess. As long as the drawers or boxes or whatever are tidy and joyful :D

Not getting through as much as hoped. Having to rest in bed between every t shirt in getting folded. Kondo folding in bed is fairly good for pacing energy levels. Thinking of asking a friend to help with a deep clean at some point - simply cannot manage that myself atm

  • I have a confession to make, I haven't been rolling up my knickers!

They were all jumbled and disorganised and I keep taking out the least favourite pairs as they are all black. I have three lots of black knickers and I prefer one set to the other two. I have tried to buy some more but I cannot find them, maybe they are not made any more?!

Anyway I took them all out and arranged them into three piles and rolled them all up. I keep them all in a box drawer divider thing. I put the favourites at the top of the box, the second favourite after that and the least favourite after that.

Now I know I won't be getting out the least favourite by accident.:)

I finished cosmetics etc yesterday. I have very little makeup, and that is nearly new because I only replaced it before my hols. in June. 4 tubes of Dove day or night cream kondoed, because they collapsed when I picked them up (sun rot) and so ended up in bin. I actually put the peppermint foot spray back in the drawer, but why? I'm really not going to use it ever.
I've cleared a lot of the komono out of the bedroom, and into the spare room (grandkids not coming until Christmas at the earliest so not needed at the mo.)
I'm actually trying to get to the old computer to move it out and to the tip, giving me a large desk to sort the paperwork. So much cabling, it's like a cats cradle. I really want just one room in this mess to be clean and tidy. Does it always look this bad or does my organisation leave something to be desired. I will succeed, I'm not going to give up, I refuse to!
  • fpcat, I think with the kondoing it almost has to look worse before it gets better. My large upstairs landing was where I put everything that was going to be CS'd and my garage was full of stuff to be thrown and recycled. DS1 helped me take all the carp to the tip yesterday and I did 4 bags and bits and pieces to the hospice CS today. I have 6 more to go tomorrow if I get time. Two of the kids are back to school and I am back to dog training so will see how it goes.

All I really have to do in the house now is the dining room cabinet, airing cupbaoard and the last few bits in the kitchen, I'm really pleased with how it's looking..:T Then, it will be onto the shed (which to be fair isn't bad as it was sorted late last year when we bought a new shed) and the garage, but the majority of that will have to wait until my other half is back from work at the end of October as a lot of it is his, and frankly I don't know what some of it actually is!! :D

fpcat, I'm assured it does get better but I'm still waiting for my place to stop looking cluttered. I can't understand why it still looks such a mess when so much has left the place.

Haven't got rid of anything for a few weeks, but been rearranging bedroom storage as several items were still lying around despite me having an empty drawer. Drawer was wrong depth for the items though so the only solution is to move everything around. Getting there slowly.

Still have too many clothes, but I do love the ones I have as I only buy things I truly love. Have been wearing better quality clothes around the house and friends keep asking if things are new as they don't remember having seen them before. They are not new, had just been kept for best/were hidden behind other things.

Instead of Kondoing actual items, have been Kondoing things from my to do list which have been niggling at me. Still have some Kondoing of paperwork to do but this will happen as and when I've been able to work through things. Making slow progress and OH and I have made a pact that September is "head down and get on with it" month so that we can enjoy a holiday later in the year without having outstanding things hanging over us.
