Trousers, scarves all done - bit of an issue with shallow drawers but managed.
Just done most of jewellery and have discarded loads, all costume stuff.
However can you lovely people tell me a how you store pairs of earrings. I have a jewellery tree for the dangly ones and I have an expanding tray in a drawer with other stuff.
Previously I've used craft foam cut in strips and pushed stud-like earrings through it but after some different ideas.
Thanks , in advance.

Cavework, I found your post so moving - it illustrates precisely what some of us have been saying about not leaving all your stuff for others to sort out when you die. But yours is an extreme case as well.
You are spot on about how all that stuff drains you - I had a similar discussion with my elderly neighbour when her husband died - he was a hoarder and she had mountains of stuff to get rid of. I said to her when she was wavering over getting rid of it 'All that stuff is lowering your energy, dragging you down' and she said 'Yes, that's exactly it'.
You know, your mother will probably feel a lot better when it's all gone as well, even if she doesn't think so now. Hopefully you can find good homes for a lot of it so that you can explain to your Mum that instead of all that stuff just gathering dust, it is being joyfully used by other people who will appreciate all those things and be glad to have them.
Good luck.

Took two bags of outgrown toys to the charity shop today and freecycled a bag and a box of miscellaneous stuff we didn't need anymore. And I'm still downsizing books although I haven't finished my clothes yet. It's a bit addictive.0

I don't have a great deal of jewellery but I do have some matching necklaces and ear-rings. I keep them in little organza wedding favour drawstring bags. This keeps matching sets together, prevents tangling and keeps them in good condition. Because the bags are see-through, it is easy to see what's in them. Another bonus is that if I am going away, I just need to pop my chosen bags in the suitcase. The bags are grouped together in a wooden box on my dressing-table and look very pretty.
As I bought quite a few bags (cheap as chips on ebay) I've used them a lot for gifts, especially in Christmas stockings.

I'm still on books and I've just realised where I'm going wrong now. I've short cut the process (not intentionally).
Rather than take all my books off the shelves I've just been removing the ones that I know at a glance I won't read again. I've significantly reduced the amount but I think this process really works when you have to stop and think about the reason you are keeping something and I haven't done that with the books that remain on the shelves.
I will take what I've bagged up to the charity shop tomorrow and do books properly tomorrow night.0 -
Some lovely thought provoking and moving posts. Thank you to all contributors.
My intention was to kondo my shoes but I continued to kondo the kitchen. We have had a swop around. We had a family meeting and decided where to put stuff so that it would work better for us. I now have lots of things for the charity shop. In time I would like to replace some items that I don't love, but I do use on a regular basis. Mainly patterned tableware, I'd prefer white.
I still have two cupboards and two drawers to sort and then the under stairs cupboard. I'm hoping that this won't take too long. I've already created some space under the stairs by grouping items together in the main kitchen cupboards. The carrier bags are stored under the stairs but since I samosa'd them (Which I found strangely relaxing) they take up hardly no space at all.
I do need to use up some stuff. I have quite a lot of ready made custard, rice pudding and jam. I like to keep the cupboards well stocked, there are six of us, but six jars of jam?
I'm off to read some of the book on my kindle app. I'm so busy kondo-ing from the tips I've picked up on here I've not had time to read it.

I had a quick rifle through my wardrobe and got rid of some tops which I have either never worn (second hand before I got them, although in perfect condition so I haven't wasted any money) or things which I no longer like or wear. When the weather warms up I'm going to ditch the tatty jumpers I'm wearing this year ready to get some new, more stylish ones, next winter.
Tomorrow I really need to tackle some paperwork. When my MIL died we had to go through all her many investments to make sure the executor in SA didn't diddle us out of anything. I don't think we need to keep them now though as it's all done and thanks to the parents in law we own our own home with no debt on it. In contrast to just a few years ago when we were worrying about being able to find another rental which we could afford after our landlord put the house we were in on the market. We did manage to find somewhere affordable (but it was a dump). Anyway, we're just getting it all decorated so it should look lovely soon.
I've ditched many books so far (which I would never have done a couple of years ago but decided enough was enough a few months ago) as I don't want 'stuff' just for the sake of it.
I did a quick kondo of my eldest daughter's knickers/socks/tights before she got home from work this evening. I can't help it. I need to sort through the 'drawer of many things' in the kitchen tomorrow and ditch junk from there.0 -
I'm probably doing a reverse kondoe, in that I am booked in for a personal shopper session within Debenhams to try and find some clothes that 'bring me joy' - then I will get rid of the things that don't!!0

BIB - that's what I did with our books. We had about 1000 books, and at least half of them we inherited from FIL when he died. MIL shipped them all over to us - complete with bookcases - but we have never even looked in most of them. They were subjects we're just not interested in. I need DH to be able to let go emotionally from a lot of the books he decided to keep but which I know will never be opened.0
