I don't often post but just had to say that this thread has been a revelation! Having spent the afternoon folding and rolling I can't believe the difference this method makes. Will be downloading the ebook to learn more.
Thanks to all who have posted links and ideas. Now to tackle the plastic carriers...0 -
:jI have done my bedroom drawers today and now have 2 spare drawers and only 1 bag of 'rubbish'. I am so pleased as I am trying to de-clutter and this is really helping.
Shoe drawers next - dreading it as I have a real 'thing' for my shoes but determined to de-clutter and organise.
Thanks to everyone for the posts and inspiration.:j0 -
I've started....
Addictive stuff eh?
I've done all my drawers, DH was amazed and is planning on attacking his drawers tomorrow. I shall make a start on my wardrobe then too - lots of stuff that can go - I did a big boot sale/charity shop dump in September and decided that any winter stuff that didn't get used wouldn't make it to Spring...there's stuff I haven't even looked at let alone worn! I have a skirt I brought for my Nans funeral 18 years ago that sits in the wardrobe year on year just in case. It's a stretchy jersey black pencil skirt - very adaptable but as a stay at home carer for DH I just don't need it. It's time to let it go.
I was just making a roast and decided to have a go at the "ranger roll" with the tea towels, I got laughed at! I shall be attacking the airing cupboard when I go to find my jimjams later - the bedding is already folded neatly into sets inside a pillowcase (which works wonders) but the towels are a bit of an avalanche waiting to happen.
My carrier bags got sorted yesterday - I big bulky bag for life full (hanging in the larder and stopping the door from closing) has been sorted into a small carrier bag full that fits perfectly!"Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0 -
Have to admit.
I'm still struggling.
I've just got in the book to how she deals with papers. Having just signed my tax return I'm wondering how this self employed woman handles such things with her attitude to paper work and if she has an accountant the accountant wants to kill her. ( no subdivisions or sorting...just stuff that cannot be thrown yet?!!)
I am feeling the desire to kondo clothes but despite enthusiasm I doubt I have the( physical) strength to do it all at once. I thought I might , a little lamely and contrary to the books advice, start with something like scarves.0 -
Well we started decluttering our clothes at around 10am this morning. OH went first and discarded 5 full black sacks of items. Next it was my turn and another 5 black sacks destined for charity shops and recycle bins. Finished around 2pm but then had to go through the bin bags to split into charity and recycling for rags so finally finished around 4pm. It really didn't take as long as I expected considering we also stoped to pop to the supermarket for a few essentials :T
We have not yet found the forever home for our clothes and shoes but they have been replaced in the wardrobes which now seem very spacious
We have decided to declutter everything before rehoming anything permanently. OH likes to follow instructions fully when he takes on a completely new concept and MK says to get rid of everything first then find a home for what is left so this is what we must do. I don't really mind as I am more than happy that he is embracing this 100% :j
The advantage we have is that we are both home at the moment as I was recently made redundant and we have decided to take some time out together. This means we can declutter to our hearts content or at least until it's all done.
This is so addictive. Can't wait to go to the charity shops and the tip tomorrow. What excitement :rotfl:

I've had an odd day on my kondo journey.
I did the horrid sink cupboard in the kitchen and I'm very happy with it. The two buckets full of carrier bags are gone. The bags are all folded and now stored in a sparkly gift bag in a different cupboard. I've broken a rule and bought storage but it's bringing me joy. One of those caddy things.
So I'm happy with under the kitchen sink.
I fell down however when I started to tackle the airing cupboard and I can't understand why I'm struggling. I have a stash of old towels that are 'dog's towels. I threw a couple away but I still have too many. I also have a small stash of beach towels. 4 of them belong to my son and his partner - these will be handed over next time I see them. But I have 5 of my own and I know I only need 1. I also know which one of them it should be, yet I couldn't part with the other 4 even though they don't bring me joy. It's ridiculous!! I've left it for now.
Has any one else found they are struggling with a category they thought would be a breeze?0 -
Lostinrates......try not to feel overwhelmed.
I started with my socks one day, pants the next, then t shirts, towels etc etc.....baby steps will get you there. Spend some time gathering all your scarves together so that you can see what you have, and begin sorting. Then fold or roll them and pop them all into their home. Then have a cuppa and bask in the roay glow of your organised scarves for a day or so until you can move on to the next thing

How do your beach towels compare with your dog towels? Would it make more sense to down grade the four towels to dog towels and clear dog towels?
I started de hoarding a few years ago and have been making this sort of decsion for a long time.
This is why the kondo approach appeals. But I do find a lot of it very wasteful. Personally, I'd keep two beach towels. One for a two day in a row trip, or if a friend / visitor accompanied.
I agree with a lot of the clear outs but I find her 'bin and replace if necessary' approach wastful both financially and of the worlds resources. Its hard to come to terms with this and the ideas of hers I really like very, very much.0 -

Thanks, this is just what I plan..
I have terrible physical strength, so I think this is my best plan. I thought if I started with that area I could see what else I could tackle that job done.0 -

I know how you feel........I have been on a declutter mission for a few years really - its now gathering momentum but I do need to know what I bin cannot be reused or recycled - fr**cycle,Oxf*m and weigh in clothes place has been very useful for me as I too hate waste.Be the change you want to see -with apologies to Gandhi
