Potential new Barclays Account?

Hi all,

was talking to a staff member in Barclays last week and she mentioned that the staff had been told that they would be releasing a "competitive" new account, hinted it was a new current account to challenge tsb/NW/santander/etc . Just wanted to check if anyone has heard anything about this?

Maybe they want to fleece the British public directly and not indirectly by fixing libor, forex rates etc?

Apologies but I forget all the scandals that Barclays gets involved in...

A reverse version of the Halifax Reward with £6.25 going to Barclays per month?

I haven't heard anything about this. I guess you can ask them throught Twitter or Facebook.

Hopefully the features would be good, and the monthly payment requirement be at £500. The Halifax Reward account feature would be good though. Higher cash withdrawal limit would be good too.

I think nearer the time of the launch, we will know more about it.

I'm certainly no great fan of Barclays for reasons I won't go into here, but as an ex-employee I do get irritated when the company gets slagged off at every opportunity.

In my opinion Barclays Bank plc is no worse than most other multinational financial services companies.
It employs many tens of thousands of people and a few are bound to be bad apples.
I suspect more than 99% of the Barclays' employees are decent & honest ordinary working people and I reckon they deserve a break.

Yes, certain individuals are guilty of criminal acts relating to Libor fixing and other illegal activities mainly within investment banking, and they should be brought to book.
However, retail banking is quite distinct from investment banking and although it's not totally innocent (e.g. the PPI scandal), I still believe the vast majority of retail staff do an honest day's work.

I do hope Barclays come up with a competitive current / savings account scheme to compete with Santander 123 and Club Lloyds. I will then consider lodging some of my savings with them.

Meanwhile, I hope the poisonous comments of some people don't further hamper Barclays' attempts to rebuild their reputation and regain custom, as in the case of the Barclays staff member quoted by the OP.

If Heng Leng has a particular gripe re Libor rigging or whatever, I would ask he/she confines it to Libor-related etc. threads, where it would be entirely appropriate (granted, Libor rigging may have impacted retail banking interest rates at the time, but only minutely and it's hardly relevant to this thread's subject matter is it?).

    Rant over.
I apologise if my comments have caused offence to anyone else.

My apologies if I diverted attention from your query.

I have no insider info' on possible forthcoming accounts from Barclays, sorry.
  • I'm surprised they have any staff left to talk about new accounts... been into Taunton branch a couple of times and it's all just machines and some guy wandering around with an iPad looking lonely!

I've seen a post on Facebook on their page about this topic, and they are unable comment on it. There is a possibilty they may know, but can't tell due to company policy.

I'll be going to branch tomorrow for some stuff, and will ask the staff about any new accounts.

I have a premier account, but limit my balance to £30.00 max as I keep my cash in high interest curr accounts.

Would like to use them for everyday banking again, if they can match the street (LBG, Santander, TSB etc)

They should also consider bringing back Bob.

Bob's just made a loss from his Barclay's shares and dumped Barclays Wealth as the bankers of his charity. Doesn't sound as if they'd want to get together again, even if the Board thought it would be a good idea (which I am sure they don't).
