Just swap the ACTUAL number plates and make sure that you and your mate are fully insured so nothing ever pings up on ANPR.0

I ended up phoning the DVLA and they advised me there was no need to put the plates on retention, they could simply transfer both plates over at the same time (no need to return the cars back to pre private plates). I pointed out there was no section on the V317 form to indicate this is what I wanted, I was told just to fill out the transfer section include the mot and vc5 for both cars and the 160 fee (x 2 80) and mark "Direct Swap" on top of the form.
Seems way to simple for the DLVA but I have sent everything off and they reckon about 2 weeks for documents to come back. I asked about taxing the car if the docs were not back before the 31 Jan, apparently you can do it over the phone without any documents .0 -
You can I believe tax your car online without any documents but I think it must have a valid MOT ( if needed ) https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax
P.s OP when someone posts normally they are not trying to have a go at you instead they are just trying to help and offer an opinion. DUTR had just put what they thought would help so I think you went a bit too far having a go.Happiness, Health and Wealth in that order please!:A0 -

Had a look over the web site looks to be only possible with document ref number from either the log book or the one from the new keeper section or a tax reminder form.
I think log book and personalised plate section of the DVLA needs to move into the 21st century why when everything else in the world can be managed on-line are we still expected to shuffle bits of paper back and forth via the post and even expected to remember what the hell we did with a cheque book. The ONLY times i have to dust off my cheque book is to pay the DVLA or pay a speeding fine.
With respect to DUTR I am sure they will take it as good willed banter as I did, anyway the very idea of a forum is to share advice, knowledge, and views and as in real life expect that to be questioned and challenged and you either learn something new or look very smug when what you have said is still correct after much keyboard bashing.0 -

Did you phone the DVLA and see what they say?
I'm not sure why you don't see why the plates cannot be 'simply' swapped?
Both vehicles have to have a plate assigned to them, one can donate to the other via the transfer process, at least one plate should have to be retained.0 -

I spoke to the DVLA. They directly swap the plates in one transaction no need to retain either of them.0 -

Glad that's resolved then.
I'm not surprised it will still cost 2*£80, but I am surprised that they will swap the plates belonging to two different owners, but as you say they will do it on a special :cool:0 -
My wife has a private number plate T19CKS on her car and my car has generic number plate YH14VVK; my wife just bought a new private number plate for her car T19KPP and used my name as nominee as the original plan was to replace YH14VVK with T19KPP and then swap her's and mine private plates i.e. T19CKS and T19KPP.
Can she directly use T19KPP to her car even I am a nominee?
Can we transfer T19CKS to my car to replace YH14VVK without retaining it?
Please help guys - its complicated.0 -
