swapping 2 private number plates

I have just swapped my car with a friend both cars have private plates that we wish to swap over too. Reading the DVLA guides it seems we are going to have to put both plates on retention certificates and then transfer onto the new car from the certificate. Which is a pain due to new tax rules and time involved and the additional cost of retention v transfer.

Is it possible to transfer the two plates between the two cars without putting the plates on retention?

Had plenty of experience in transferring a plate onto retention and moving from one car to anouther but seems swapping 2 private plates is even more of a pain.

Yes you can, but both cars have to have the same registered keeper, the retention is £25 a year the other fee is £80 I'm not sure if that can be avoided.

I have answered your queiry, if you want me to type what you want to read then just say so and I will, the full rules are on the DVLA website though.
As said the £105 is made up of £25 retention per year and £80 admin or whatever they call it. (Per registration)
Can you do it for free? Probably not.

How does the new tax rules affect anything about transferring a cherished number?

Tax is removed from the vehicle as soon as change of keeper is registered. The new keeper can only tax the car with the V5 or the new keeper supliment....Both have to be sent to DVLA when transferring or retaining plates one.

I asked "Is it possible to transfer the two plates between the two cars without putting the plates on retention?"

But thanks for pointing out the process of retention and the costs and not answering the queiry in a ever so sarcastic manner. Helpful

Post #2 included Yes you can, but both cars have to have the same registered keeper, that doesn't involve retention which is £25, so I don't see why you are throwing your toys out of the pram?

ETA the £80 is called the transfer fee.

I am not throwing my toys out of the pram but I am not sure you are correct as to transfer a plate there is no need for both vehicles to have the same registered keeper

    From the DVLA Web page
    5.

    Transferring a registration number
You can transfer your vehicle registration:

from your vehicle to another one in your name
    to a vehicle you’re buying
    to someone else’s vehicle

I don't see any guidance or reference for a transfer of two plates at the same time

It's a tricky one & I think it can be done. You will need to tax both cars online or at the PO using V5C2 (green slip) Then you can both drive the new car taxed while the transfer is going through (yes you are both likely to lose a months tax each from the vehicles you are changing from, & you will be driving with each others' plate at this time (but as you know each other it shouldn't be a problem)

You both need to fill in the V317 for your current car to transfer the registrations.... the V5 will need to be filled in with the new keeper details (i.e your friend) & the new keeper details will need to be on the V317 (watch that bit because that is where the confusion arises - make sure the correct car is registered to the correct new keeper) As you have taxed your 'new' vehicles, you will not need to submit insurance, but will need to submit your current MOT certificates so that duplicates can be issued....

I think the transfer is £80 each...

    Good luck

As you remember from physics, there cannot be an exact same time, so one vehicle has to be a doner (your vehicle registration) to the vehicle you are obtaining or to someone else's vehicle, when you look at it all, somewhere along the line your request has to fall within one of the scenarios in section 5. So from what you describe , at least one of the plates will have to be retained (£25) and 2 lots of transfer fee (£160) , even at best and you do phone them and they will honour the request as a special , I fear it will still cost £160 between the two of you.
