Cheapest Way To Call 0871??

Hi Everyone,

I didn't realise there was a difference between 0870 and 0871. I had to call an 0871 number yesterday and since it was the weekend I went through BT assuming I was getting the call at 1.5p a minute as it says on the UKcallchecker but when I checked the bill online today apprently I was paying around 9p a min instead

I checked saynoto0870 before making the call as I never call an 0870 number if I can help it but the geographical numbers for this company just don't get you through to the customer services. I need to call them again at least once so what is the cheapest way to call 0871 - is there a cheaper way at all? yesterday's call has cost me £2.50 and just to make it more annoying it was a waste of time  Thanks.

Regards

Michelle

0871 numbers are increasingly (and far more expensively) the replacement for the 0870 rip-off.

From 1/2/08, 0870 numbers must cost no more to call than 01/02 numbers - so watch the rip-off merchants migrate like rats off as sinking ship to 0871 numbers.

There are numerous different 0871 numbers (and Ofcom has talked about introducing 0872 and 0873 numbers too) - and costs vary between 6p and 10p/minute - but, as you have found out, how will callers know?
Their - possessive pronoun (owned by them e.g. "They locked their car").
    They're - colloquial/abbreviated version of 'They are'
There - noun (location other than here e.g. "You can buy groceries there") OR adverb (in or at that place e.g. "They have lived there for years") OR adverb (to or towards that place e.g. "Go there at noon") OR adverb (in that matter e.g. " I agree with you there").

That's really infuriating  At least with 0870 you get them cheaper at weekends through bt and some others but with this I guess there's nothing you can do other than not call the number but when it's urgent you've not got a choice have you?! Thanks for the info April.

From 1/8/07, that won't be the case if you continue to use BT to make those daytime weekend calls (see HERE).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Hi Heinz,

Thanks for the info. I only ever call 0870 numbers if I really, really have to so it's a rare occurrence but I do usually try to wait and do it at the weekend if it's not urgent. I'm just really annoyed at this 0871 number as I can't see any other way of contacting them and I don't want another £2.50 phone call

    Regards

Which company is it with this 0871 number? Would you like to name and shame them?

You can also add this company to this 'Hall of Shame' thread here:

    Hi AP,

No problem with naming and shaming at all - it's Setanta Sports and I've already named and shamed them quite strongly HERE although at the time I hadn't realised about the 0871 number or I would have been even more furious. I got my mum to send them an email instead and got the obligatory "we'll reply within 5 working days" response so I'll wait a day or two in case they reply quicker. I'm not sure what number they previously used before 0871 but I'd guess it would be 0870.

    Hi Michelle

Write to them 2nd class or leave unstamped let them pay postage plus
penalty. I find email replies from cos.are next to useless. Or explain in
your letter premium rates are barred from your phone. If they refuse
to give you a geo number give these people a miss.Do you really
want to do business with a co that charges 10p a min.

0871 that cos. use as contact numbers are nasty , alot worse than 0870.
    a) as you have found they are just as costly in the eve or weekend.
    b) they cannot be overriden by friendly 0844 numbers unlike 0870.

Easier said than done for some , but the only way these scammers will learn
is if people dont use their service .
I am refusing to use an 0871 contact number for a prepaid card.We are
slowly making some progress by letter. They sometimes give me a geo number.
If not I will not use them.
    Good luck
    Alan

Just received the following from Tiscali, notice how they say it is to improve service rather than to rip us off even more!
    upg_logo.gif
Introducing one number for customer support
To enhance the service we offer you we're introducing one new number for all technical support, billing and customer care enquiries.
From the 15th August 2007 please dial 0871 222 3311. Calls will be charged at 10p a minute*. Calls from a Tiscali Talk landline will be charged at the lower rate of 5p a minute.
Please note: we also have a local rate number 0845 663 2200 for service updates providing up-to-date information on any outages that may impact your local area

Notice the continual lie about "local rate number" local rate doesn't exist, 0845 is a mini premium rate revenue sharing number.
Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition

It's absolutely infuriating and I'm sure more and more companies will do it if they can get away with it.
