OS Daily thread Sunday 4th January

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine

  • Morning all

DGS stayed last night instead of DGD, we don't mind who stays, we love to spend time with all of them. Today he & I are making a purple sword out of fabric, we're using an old shirt of hubby's for the blade & some black PVC left over from the belt on hubby's Father Christmas outfit for the handle. DGS is going home about 11ish as they are all going to a pantomime.

I've posted pics of my finished rainbow blanket, I ran out of violet yarn about 3 inches short of completing the final border, that's the problem with using gifted/CS yarn, still I finished it off with something pretty similar, now I need to decide what to crochet next, maybe a corner to corner blanket or a waffle stitch one, c2c looks best in a random yarn & I only have oddments of that, so I will probably do a waffle one next..

Last day of the holiday today, so I need to sort out packups for us both & get any last jobs done, but hubby is on lates next so he won't want an evening meal.

    Have a good day everyone.

    Hugs Hester

Love your blanket Hester, who's it for? I'd keep it for myself if it were me :D

It's foggy and frosty here this morning so I'm staying in, apart from nipping into the garden occasionally to make sure the chickens' water hasn't frozen over.

Everything is clean and tidy, I don't have anything to do other than pass the boxes of Christmas decs up to mr tru in the loft. I'll get stuck into some crochet today, I feel the need to start a new blanket :D

  • Greetings one and all. By heck but it's a cold one here this morning! Can you point me in the direction of your blog Hester, I would love to see your finished blanket.

This laptop (a Toshiba Satellite purchased early September) is driving me insane! I keep thinking I have got to grips with it and then I manage to muck something else up! I never had this trouble with my old second-hand laptop or desktop pc! I seem to have done something with the synaptics pointing device so if there are any experts out there! I can only make it do things by right clicking first!

Well I got all the decs down yesterday and all the boxes are now on the landing waiting to go back up in the loft. It felt lovely to get dusted and vacced yesterday, though it does look bare!

This morning I am off to Sainsbury's - first shop since before Xmas. I am determined to get stocks down in the freezers and store cupboards so really just shopping for salad, fruit and veg. Unless I spot a bargain too good to resist!!

I have a pile of ironing to be tackled this afternoon. The laundry basket is hidden away in the wardrobe and some days it's a case of out of sight, out of mind and I forget about it! I shall leave it on the bedroom floor where I can't ignore it!

Well I think it's brekkie time for me, though DH is still in bed. I wish I could sleep longer. Have a good day everyone and wrap up warm it's bitter out there. I must fill all the bird feeders up when I am dressed as they are all looking low. These birds cost me a fortune but I love watching them. We have a new visitor this winter, a woodpecker, who hasn't visited us before.

  • Thanks tru. That's lovely Hester, well done. Many years ago, when the children were small, I made an enormous blanket from crochet squares. Just as a way to use up all my leftover wool, though I ended up having to buy and scrounge more! That must be almost 40 years ago and the blanket is still going strong. During the caravan season it lives at the 'van to throw on the bed if there's a chilly night and in winter it lives here for whenever someone just wants to snuggle under it! It's been the most useful thing I have ever made.

    Morning everyone

Birthday wishes to those celebrating a birthday, hope you have a great day x

Hugs and get well wishes to those that want/need them.

Now light, very cold and frosty.

DH is in the bath, I’m enjoying first peaceful cuppas of the day whilst on here. DH got in at nearly 7pm last night and the lunch they had been provided with was quite large so he just wanted an egg sandwich, which I organised, boys both had pizza and I just fancied some salad with some salmon. Today we’ll be having roast chicken for lunch with the normal trimmings and there’s some LO’s in the fridge that need using up. I’ll be organising pack-ups too, so I don’t have to do that in the morning – I think it’s going to hit the menfolk hard in this house as they’ve all been off for 2 weeks.

Work yesterday morning was very busy – as we expected it to be, loads of people moaning etc. You just have to let it go over your head and can’t take it personally. I’m working my normal working week again on Monday to Wednesday, then going in for a training session on my day off on Thursday morning, then I have the next week off.

After work yesterday I came home got changed and had a quick cuppa, then went with my shopping list to the SM – I went to MrT as it’s a new store with a car park underneath the store so you can get from the car park into the store under cover and it was absolutely pouring down with heavy rain and had been most of the morning – unfortunately everyone else seemed to have the same idea, the car park was packed the store was very busy but not horrendous but took me a while to do a shop as it’s not where I usually shop – but the bill was eyewateringly expensive at the end, in my defence I did buy a large pack of toilet rolls, big pack of DW tabs, washing powder, big pack of risotto rice, 2 x big packs of pasta, Sudafed, so on a quick add up of just those bits that’s about £25, I definitely can’t spend this much on a regular basis so will be getting the desk diary ready today to take part in the grocery challenge and see what I can do – I have a very healthy store cupboard so there shouldn’t be any reason not to be able to cut this cost down, I have very good stocks of most things foodwise and toiletries, cleaning products etc. I have noted also that when I don’t bake/cook meals from scratch I spend more with no LO’s – so just need to be more organised and plan and prep better. I’m going to keep a record of how much I spend each week now until I get paid so I can see what’s happening, then start the gc from next payday.

    Have peaceful Sundays’ everyone x

    Take care x

    Keep safe and well x

    Good Morning,

Busy day for me today, Church and then taking my Sunday School Group out for the Christmas party, they chose Nandos.

I will be getting the money back as this comes out of the budget. Family Service today, so I get a day off :) Next week I start a fresh new year and new topic.

Yesterday the Yarn balls went well, if not a little messy. I then got out Cluedo, the children have never played it before and they all loved it. Daddy Rivett had never played it before either, I also found out that he is very competitive :)

The children sat down and watched, I still have a copy which I converted from my VHS. I love the Bre Rabbit Stories and it was lovely to share this with them. We then started watching Clue as Daddy Rivett mentioned the film while we were playing Cluedo. They were a bit tired so we watched half of it and then it was time to home, but we all had a wonderful day.

I have to say, I love the blanket that Hester has made it is beautiful.

Have a wonderful day everyone and see you later xxx

  • Good Morning everyone, cold and grey here again today but not wet, so small mercies. Not much planned for today but we're having irish stew for supper to use up some YS lamb from the freezer so that will be something to look forward to. DD2 goes back to work this coming week after her maternity leave and that Zebra will be going to nursery 3 days a week. He's been visiting and loves it, even cries when he has to come away so I hope he'll be fine but I know it will be hard for his mum until she gets used to it!

Looking around gardens on my walk with the hound yesterday we have daffodils wide open on the sunny spot corners, all the bulbs are showing little nubbly green noses through the grass and soil and there are catkins out and fat little swelling green leaf buds on lots of the bushes. I know this time of year is dreary and tedious but I know that spring is thinking about arriving so we'll all cheer up in the not too distant future as the days lengthen and it warms up won't we?

Have yourselves a lovely day, and if you are out and about have a little look for signs of spring in your neck of the woods, it's a real spirit lifter, Lyn xxx.

    Hi everyone,

I'm sitting in a lovely, peaceful, clean house, it's great after all the hustle and bustle and hard work of the last couple of weeks. I love seeing everyone but I also like quiet times by myself.

Today I shall rummage through the freezer and maybe do some batch cooking and also do some quilting.

    Have a good day.
  • Good morning all.

Did a freezer inventory last night. Was going to go to sainsburys this morning to take advantage of a £12 off a £60 shop but can't justify spending £60 really. Unless I stock up on cat litter & tins of basics. So will probably go to Aldi.

Am decluttering Christmas today. And cleaning the bathroom.

Tomorrow I'm starting a 3 full day first aid course. Himself is off to look after the youngest. So I want the house and food in some sort of order. He can cope but I like to know stuff is done! The house is normally my do Ian as he's out of he house for 14 hours most week days.

Hester, I've got a pile of patterns to send to you. I will do that later this week.

Older 2 back to school tomorrow. They hate school so that will be fun. Youngest back on Tuesday and he always has a meltdown till he gets into the car. Himself will witness what the mornings are like for me. I've got to leave by 8am each morning so himself will have to deal.

Right, will finish my coffee and get dressed and go shopping.

    Love,hugs and spoons x
