Can anyone suggest a decent holiday destination along the lines of Gran Canaria or Cyprus or maybe somewhere else... for two middle aged fellas (one just got divorced) beach close by. Maybe golf course, near a town .......please no screaming kids or 18-30 type places

We been looking on the net and got bogged down with the choice

So you searched the www and were "bogged down with choice" so you came onto a Forum? I suspect your science is a bit flawed, don't you think?

We will all give you suggestions therefore increasing choice.

    Lets start with some basics:
    Your Budget
    Flight Time (min/max)
    AI/HB/BB
    Rating/s

You could go on a Caribbean/Med cruise.
You could go to Turkey, Spain, Italy, France etc. etc.

Also what kind of temperatures are you looking for? Anywhere around the Med will be unpredictable at this time of year. In Cyprus and south of Spain it is usually nice enough for sitting outside in T-shirt during the day but you will need a coat/jacket at night and rain is a possibility. If you want sunbathing weather then you will have to go further afield to the Canaries or Egypt.

Also remember that many tourist resorts are pretty dead during January.

If you are looking for golf then somewhere along the Algarve in Portugal would be an option. You aren't guaranteed good weather though.

You're stuck with the Canaries if you want anywhere that will be open. You could try Madeira if you like walking and the outdoors. It definitely has few kids and no 18-30 crowd.

yes, thats right....thought i would get some more opinions from similar minded folks.....as i said not where there are not a lot of children and also not a pensioners paradise. I have never been on a sun holiday before so not up to speed about the favoured locations.

The issue we have here is the other person is on a tight budget and 'thought' it was going to be around the 300 pounds mark, until last night we started looking on the different sites.......of course the money saved in one place would out on taxis/buses and overall dissatisfaction.
Some places read very well then in the reviews it turns out that its in a secluded location, we would rather it it be near a town and the beach.

Not looking for a cruise, or activity-type trip.

So I am reckoning on a budget of 500 > 600 pounds, flight times of around 4 hrs, half board for about a week and flying from Exeter (limits us to Canaries/Spain or Egypt; and Egypt is a off the list for me) or Bristol. Don't need endless cultural trips to look at old monuments, rather go and play a bit of golf.

Honestly speaking I am intrigued by Cyprus.......and did consider Thailand but its a long trip for only 1 week

Have you looked at Northern Cyprus? A bit quieter than the South.

£300 should buy you quite a lot at this time of year.

Yes, Cyprus could work as long as you aren't expecting hot weather. It would be around 21C during the day now which may not be hot but it is at least nicer than here. Food and accommodation are relatively cheap when you get there and the recent fall in the Euro helps.

Easyjet fly from Gatwick to Larnaca and Paphos. I don't think there are any direct routes from the South West.
  • Puerto Del Carmen on Lanzarote?

Large resort with huge beaches, should be decent weather and no 18-30 crowd. Hundreds of restaurants/bars and only 10 minutes transfer from the airport. Being the Canaries the resort should be reasonably busy unlike most resorts on the Med.

Some great deals from Exeter on 11th Jan. HB in the region of £400 in very nice hotels, or AI for around the £500 mark via Travel Republic.

Think I would agree with Cubegame re Northern Cyprus. Have been there a couple of times, and it is not as commercialised as the south.

I just came back yesterday from 10 days in Adeje,Tenerife, weather was absolutely lovely..near beaches, a town and not too far from golf courses...it would be much cheaper now than the 10 days we had over the christmas/ new year period...
Corduroy pillows are making headlines! Back home in London now after 27years wait! Duvet know it's Christmas, not original, it's a cover.
