  • 2000 miles a year? Why not just hire one as and when you need it?

...but still have the same amount of snow!
  • Yeh, the surf looks ideal! Checked auto trader, but nothing manual.

Hiring is not always easy. I have no zip car scheme near me. By the time I get to a car rental agency, registered a good hours have gone, then is the taking back the next day all very messy, but would be cheaper.

Lots of other firms happily do the same, a local independant may even do it for free.

I'm a big tall bloke with a duff back too.

Over the years I've put lots of miles on lots of different vehicles either as company cars, or cars I have owned, ranging from Austins(!) to Mercs.

My car for the last ten years is an Audi A6 and it is easily the best engineered, most reliable, most economical, best handling, safest and most comfortable car I have ever had. Because it earns it, it is still serviced by Audi - and they usually offer lower labour rates on older cars on their books.

Don't be afraid to buy a high mileage diesel one if you can be sure it has been serviced properly and not pranged or otherwise abused. I thought I was taking a chance at 130,000 but it was one owner and had been used on a daily motorway commute. It has now done 220,000 and apart from brakes it is almost entirely still original and drives better than many cars that have only done 50,000.

It is a biggish car so parking is not the easiest, and some might say it sits a bit low, but it has big doors. With electrically adjustable seats, I've not had much trouble getting in and out, and my octagerian father who has osteo-arthritis manages it better than many taller cars.

If the fuel guage stopped working I could reliably decide when to fill up based on the mileometer alone. 50 mpg no matter how I drive it!

And I think the factory built-in security was always pretty good.

Don't think I'd want a pre 2008 one, supposedly they get expensive to look after with age.

I wouldn't go any older than 2007 for Honda Jazz. Jazz 07 are very well recommend as its the last of its kind (engine I-DSI) before they switched to a new engine type (I-VTEC) on the new 08/09 plate.

For 2000 miles a year a well looked after 07 Jazz could easily handle that.
