is it the moment your job says they no longer need you... or when your final pay cheque goes in the bank?

Neither. It's when you have completed your last day of employment.0

You sign on as soon as you've completed your last day of employment. I believe that your entitlement to benefits doesn't kick in until three days after that, so get online and apply now as it will not be back-dated.
Many people are on monthly pay-roll, so it doesn't make sense to wait until the month-end when your last pay will be creditied to your bank account. This could mean losing up to three weeks of your JSA entitlement.
If you have two year's worth of NI contributions under your belt you should apply for Contributions-based JSA. This lasts for six months, and then you will be shifted to income-based where your savings will be taken into account.0 -

Do you need the credits, may be more bother than its worth if you have enough contributions for your requirements.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -
