Phone as dedicated MP3 player.
Anyone do this?
My iPod classic is showing its age and I can't justify paying out for an iPod touch, nor can I afford to tbh since even refurbished the 32gig is £150. So am thinking of buying a cheap android phone and using a 32gb SD card that I already have.
Can't use my phone as it's an iPhone 5, only 16gb so not enough room.
I know I could get something like a Sansa clip but I would like the ability to grab a song/album on the go from the play store etc.
Are there any brands that would be better sound quality wise? Or will they all be much the same? Tbh I'm not an audiophile anyway so as long as it sounds okay I'm happy.
If anyone has any suggestions of a phone that would be suitable? Basically just a half decent android phone that doesn't need a sim to run. Has a decent battery and SD card slot.
Thanks.

Even cheap androids like the Galaxy Y have reasonable music players.
I would personally prefer a dedicated music player like the Sony Walkman series (more compact, probably better battery life) but that's just me.
Do you need iTunes integration (coming from an iPod)?0 -
Re the memory, I think most phones with a card slot take 32gb cards, even, e.g., Alcatel C1 that can be bought for as little as £20.
For bigger capacity see this old thread: Phone with most expandable memory0 -
Having just upgraded my ipod mini this is what I would do in your shoes:
Buy a faulty (failed HDD i.e won't boot up and goes to sad face icon) ipod mini off ebay for £2-£5. Buy a new battery for £6 and then buy a 32GB compact flash card for £20. Very easy job to do and lots of howto videos on youtube
This way you end up with a good as new 32GB ipod for approx £300 -

Thanks and whilst I would rather have a dedicated music player te likes of the Sony can't download music on the go. Which is one of the main reasons for me upgrading.
Don't need itunes as I can just copy the library over to whichever device I end up with.Re the memory, I think most phones with a card slot take 32gb cards, even, e.g., Alcatel C1 that can be bought for as little as £20.

Thanks. Will check the thread out. Don't need 128gb but wouldn't mind the option of upgrading to 64 in future.Having just upgraded my ipod mini this is what I would do in your shoes:

Thanks but again, I can't download music on the fly with an iPod nano.Sigless0
