Virgin Media - what's not to like?

Options
Just having a look at changing broadband for my parents and stumbled onto Virgin's website. Their Big Kahuna package looks quite good and I think it ticks all their boxes on what they watch on Sky.

My main concern would be using their TiVo box. Is it pretty straight forward? They've been with Sky forever so not sure how they would take to the change

Thanks

  • The TiVo box is very straightforward, I've had it a couple of years, to the point where I hate using the sky plus box at my parents as (IMO) it is more complicated.

My only gripe with Virgin is they keep raising prices without giving anything in return. You need to get on the phone and complain every year and see what reduction they will offer or what additional benefits they will give. Eg last time they wouldn't give discount, but offered a new package for the same price which included faster internet, extra channels and the new TiVo box with free installation.
Generally customer services are fine to deal with

Watch out for the weekend calls part of the deal- everything outside that's a bit pricey.

You'll need to avoid using your landline for Monday to Friday. or else get a cheaper mobile service (e.g Three's -3-2-1 PAYG or delightmobile's similarly-priced service) or your bills will just keep creeping up relentlessly into the £50s-60s

Or, if you use the phone a lot, get a cheap mobile phone and (assuming the reception's good) investigate the £5 Virgin mobile SIM you can add to the media package,

What's not to like? Three price rises in less than 12 months equating to around a 20% rise! Latest one is supposedly an average 5.9% rise yet the majority of people commenting online are getting 10%+ rises.

I forgot to mention, we have had "free" speed upgrades during that time - which each time (until this one) have coincided with a price rise (no link between the two at all, apparently).

It's entirely up to you but sit down with your parents, not sure how old they are, and go through the channels that they watch.

You may find Broadband with NowTV and Freeview is good enough for them. If they mainly watch Living, Fox and Atlantic on Sky then they could save a lot of money.

To be fair, they gave all fibre broadband users a free increase of speed. Yes, you had to apply for it by clicking on a box in the "my account" area of their site, but still...

    I think it is:

    30Mb > 50Mb
    50Mb > 100Mb
    100Mb > 152Mb

    Although this is complete tosh:

They're comparing fibre BB with ADSL2 - so comparing a F1 racing car with standard model of any make - not exactly a fair comparison.

I can appreciate this is the TV section but it's unusual for someone to have TV but not BB with someone.
