Santander Cancelled it's Credit Card

  • today I had the 'oddest' thing happening to me in regards to this santander 123 CC:

I was accepted just a couple of weeks ago, got my card, credit limit of £7300.

Yesterday I received the card and I went shopping (I had loads of things to shop for hence why I applied for 0% purchase card)

I spent approx £1500 in several ways: 3 transactions chip and pin verified at the shops, one online (next directory).

This morning at 8am the phone wakes me up....an automated call by santander asking me if I recognise the transactions from yesterday, if I do not to press '2', I pressed 2 as there was ONE online transaction for 0.69 pence which I am not aware of (from the states???) and was curious as to what this was, however I was put through to speak to an operator, waited forever and then had to answer my front door so hang up.

I then went online to do more shopping and my card was blocked, so I called them

the 'chap' said to me that he took all the blocks off (as I passed security) and now my card should work...

however the card was still blocked so I called them back.

this time they put me on hold, then 3 minutes later tell me that a 'special department' has to call me back, they are not allowed to tell me who has to call me back or why and I have to wait until 'they' call me.

I then went into my online banking and my credit card account which has been there has VANISHED! totally!

I call them back to say this has happened and again get told I have to wait for this 'special department' to call me back.

I waited all day and no phone call so far, my account is still not there in my online banking.

    WHAT THE?????

if they decided to cancel my card surely they can just tell me? will it be something else? I know I'll find out eventually but this is so 'odd'!

I suspect they put a stop on it at that point if you said you did not recognise a transaction and did not follow it up by talking to them.

Did you not clarify with the 'chap' about the earlier unrecognised transaction?

To be fair, it sounded like they did try to speak with you but you went off to answer the door ... sooooooo

    Just sayin ...

The 69p sounds like a 'test transaction' of US$1 which often happens with a transaction with a firm in the USA. It is never debited to your account.

They presumably suspect your card has been compromised. Also although you are a new account holder to spend 'approx £1500 in several ways' the day you received the card and attempting to spend more, might count as an 'unusual spending pattern'.

It is also possible that they have received other data that brings into question the information you gave on your application(usually other debts or outgoings as well as income) and they will need to check that out.

But they do deliver on Saturdays, and the last OP's post was on Friday.
Also, the letter was sent apparently on Thursday or earlier.

    Nitpicking?

No apparent about it, there is no mention of when the letter is being sent. I don't know if you ever check the date on company letters and the day they arrive, it is not unusual for it to be a week between date and arrival.

This probably. Similarly they would block a card if it is used in another country etc.

Usually it would be a week or so. Such organisations work departmentally and correspondence will be sent to some secretarial team to be produced. From there it will go to the mail room and usually get a second class postage.

The OP posted on 2nd that he spoke to them 'yesterday' being New Years day. On that basis, its likely the letter has not even been produced as yet.

However, if it was me I'd have sorted it out on the phone and would want to know why the card services have been withdrawn. Someone telling me a letter is going out without any further explanation would not be enough for me. The letter would only be confirmation of what I would already know.

So waiting for a letter and not being given any further information on the phone strikes me as strange.....

    Hi,

I received the letter today, it's just a generic decline letter, I have checked my credit check on noddle and don't have any defaults no cifas.

I applied for the card on 19th of November and they decided to cancel the card on the 30th of December.

I can't upload the picture due to being a new member. remove the spaces.

Anything I can do? What would be next step? Shall I just pay off the full amount I owe them ?

    Thanks
