    C batteries are 1.5V each, so I would suggest 6 Volts (4x1.5V).

    It's common practice to run torch bulbs at slightly over their rated voltage. If you can find someone who sells that type of bulb, look for the next one below 6V.
    If it sticks, force it.
    If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
