M25 Cameras
Comments
-
If you read the comments from the police and the HA carefully they actually say that the cameras are capable of enforcing any speed up to 220mph! They do not actually say that they are being used to enforce the 70mph limit. The cameras do sometimes, but not always flash when a vehicle is exceeding 70mph but this cannot be enforced.Yorkshire_Traveller wrote: »Well you'd be in trouble if you followed this advice when driving on the M62 near me (Leeds/Bradford). When the variable speed limits are not showing the cameras are still active - often see them flash for cars driving 80mph+.
It has been confirmed in local press/TV that these camera do enforce the national speed limit when not showing a lower variable limit.
The SI (Statutory Instrument) currently in force only authorises the cameras on managed (smart) motorways for the enforcement of limits as displayed on the signs. Nothing wrong with the cameras - it is the legal paperwork that stops the enforcement of the 70mph limit.0 -

Isn't the NSL a limit displayed on the signs?0 -

If you're driving at the right speed you don't need to brake for them anyway so even if they are enforcing there is no need to slow down

Sometimes after there has been a lower limit in operation the last gantry has shown the NSL sign but I'm not sure if this is an authorised sign for electronic display so it might just be "for information". On other occassions after a lower limit has been in use the gantry at the end has just been blank.
The M25 is slightly different in that a number of the new HADEC cameras have been installed. A single camera on one the gantry legs can enforce the NSL across all lanes and as it is separate from the managed systems it is authorised to enforce the NSL. No doubt these will be getting rolled out in greater numbers in the future!0
