Cheap Days out with the Children in Wales!

The biggest hit of our holiday in Wales in August was the National Slate Museum at Llanberis http://www.museumwales.ac.uk/en/slate/. It has lots of displays and equipment from the time when the site was a self sufficient (all the machinery was serviced and repaired in situ) slate mine.
One highlight was watching a bloke splitting slate into tiles and cutting circular disks. While he was doing this he described what it was like doing the job for real. The quarry owner used to deduct money from the wages for slates that would be broken while being transported to the port for export. A tip I'd pass on is that if one of your tribe volunteers to help him he/she will be rewarded with a finished slate.
There's also a small row of cottages furnished and equipped as they would have been in 1861, 1901 and 1969.
Half a day is the minimum needed I'd suggest. They have a cafe/restaurant serving locally sourced food.0 -

Hubby is down the Knap at the mo and he said the boats are back on the lake - just hope they've cleared the green sludge off!
There are lots of free playranger/playscheme events in Barry - lists available on the Vale of Glamorgan website - I would imagine Cardiff etc are doing similar things.0 -
In North East Wales - lots of free activities at Loggerheads Country Park. Great for walks, as well as arranged activities.

They used to charge for admission but it's been free since sometime last year. There's a very nice cafe there so you can use the money you save on admission to pay for lunch instead. The Sunday lunches in particular are excellent.
