Amelia Trust Farm (free) - on five mile lane (between Barry and the A48) - good half a day can be spent here - picnic area or the cafe is dead cheap

Porthkerry Country Park/The Knap or Barry Island - you can just take advantage of the beaches rather than spend money

Cefn Mably farm near St Mellons - got to pay to get in here and I don't think it's as good as the Amelia Trust farm

Depending on how old your children are there is the Taff cycle trail - from Cardiff Castle along to Castell Coch and further

Roath Park - excellent playground and you can always go on the boat

Tredegar Park - not sure what's there these days or if there is a charge

Bit further afield is Folly Farm - fantastic day out for me and my daughter (who's 3) - plan in advance and send off your tesco clubcard vouchers and it's free technically

Thought I'd mention that I was in Swansea on Monday and found out that in Singleton Park, in the Botanic Gardens, there is childrens entertainment on Mondays and Fridays,
1-4pm and costs 50p per child (sundays are free!) to take part, story telling, art workshops etc, my two had a great time.

One for the Adults diary too,
The Mumbles & Swansea Bay Beer Festival,
    Thursday16th-Saturday 18th of August.
    Thurs:5-11pm
Fri & Sat:12noon-11pm Takes place in Brangwyn Hall.

  • Porthcawl has a Surf Cult sea festival at the end of August 30th August to 9th of September

    http://www.surf-cult.co.uk/whatson.html

Some of the attractions are free, for example the Tsunami Cup - charitable surf comp at rest bay on the 1st and 2nd of September.

Lots of things on that might appeal to older children in particular
Hope this info is of use to some peeps

A bit further West in Carmarthenshire is the National Botanical Gardens of Wales. Not super cheap, but the admission price drops in low season, and under 5's are free the whole year:

It's lovely countryside in that area - Towy Valley - with lots of country estate parks open to the public, and picturesque little towns and villages like Llandeilo's pastel coloured cottages overlooking the river.
