Confused by EDF

Quite simply i am on the Blue + price promise fix march 2016.(EDF)

They email regularly if other prices are cheaper elsewhere(very good).....

BUT having checked the mse energy club i see that i could save £5 a month on the EDF May 2016 blue + price promise!

Why dont they tell me that i can save money with THEM by transferring to this tariff???

Very strange business model if you ask me and in any event the Coop beats the May 2016 edf prices.....:undecided:

But could you actually? Comparisons have been known to slightly inaccurate, due to accounting for a period on standard tariffs etc.

Have you verified that this figure is correct by manually comparing your unit price and standing charge?

Also, the Price Promise is that they will let you know if you can save more than £1 a week "elsewhere", that is with another supplier, no where does it say they will let you know about their own tariffs. However, they might have their own tariff price alerts that you can opt into/out of separately. They really should make that clearer though if I'm being honest, it took me to go to the "small print" to figure that out!

But as you say this is irrelevant anyway as you found the Co-op to have a better deal! :D

EDIT: Scratch that, just found the page that states "we'll let you know if a competitor or EDF Energy launches a product that's cheaper by more than £52 (inc VAT) per year i.e. £1 per week (based on typical annual consumption‡)."

So it looks like your alert is only on average consumption, not your individual figures.

Have a look at the tariff start date. I am on an OVO fixed tariff which on comparison sites is shown as 2 tariffs - one pre Jun 14 and one post Jun 14. They have the same title and the same end date. In other words, OVO withdrew the pre Jun tariff and replaced it with a post Jun tariff.

  • Thanks for replies.

Decided to go with the Co-op....their rates really are much cheaper(over £170 per year cheaper actually).

    Pleased with MSE energy club.

How strange, I switched FROM Co op via MSE EC to EDF, cause it was cheaper, now im switching to E ON cause MSE EC says that is cheaper??
  • Yes it is strange, but from what i gather tariffs vary depending on which part of the Country you reside.

Be careful - it's only cheaper if the price per kwh and/or the daily standing charge is less that the rate you are currently paying.

As far as I'm concerned the comparison sites are a guide, you must do your own sums to make sure that the comparisons are really valid and match your consumption profile.

In my case if I just use a comparison site without investigating the unit cost I can save £430 a year. BUT, that assumes that I go onto my suppliers standard variable tariff at the end of my contract in April.
However in reality I will be changing tariffs at contract end so the best I can currently save is about £30 based on my present tariff (and I'd lose that in early termination fees).
Also as I'll use about 50% of my annual energy consumption between now and April I'll be better off staying on my present lower unit rate.

EDF's price promise guarantee covers both their own tariffs and other suppliers, but they only tell you if a new tariff can save you £52 per year at OFGEM typical consumption.

It doesn't say above but I'd bet the £5 a month saving you have quoted would be based on your own consumption not OFGEM typical.

    Thanks,understand.

The Co-op rates are cheaper. The tariffs and standing charges are shown on the mse energy club tables.

    This is correct.

It would seem that EDF have been listening - yesterdays price advice email was for 'one of our own', that being BPP May 2016.
