If this gets worse I shall take it into the local repair man, who only charged me £20 last time. They see these problems all the time, and have an immediate answer.
I'd sent an email request to a local trusted computer place who are a new-ish start up (about 5-10 years old?) and come recommended by many.

They quoted me a discounted student fee of £60 to look at what the problem is and then would further quote once they worked out a way to resolve the problem. £60 is more than I spend on anything in one go in one week, I just don't have the money! I'll keep looking though because if your able to get a quote as low as £20 maybe I'm just not asking the right people.

Have you tried taking out the USB receiver and plugging it back in?
Try pressing the reset button on the keyboard - that often works for me when my wireless key board plays dead.

No "reset" button on either the mouse or keyboard. I used to have one with a reset/reconnect button but there isn't one on these. I have tried taking the USB port out and putting them in again; no difference. I've tried taking the batteries out and replacing them at one occasion three times (i.e three sets of batteries) and still nothing.

I've also tried using a wired keyboard and still get the same issues so I am pretty sure it's not a wireless connection issue which is the problem.

On a lot of PCs the correct USB sockets for the keyboard and mouse are the top two sockets at the rear, the idea is that these ports should never enter power saving mode under newer operating systems.
