Same problem here Jennie, on the laptop, hadn't thought about wireless door bells, thank you Lone Stranger.
I get over it by pressing the power button , then waiting a while. It re-establishes ,then might go several days before playing up again.

well, as selfish as it sounds, I'm glad I'm not alone!

I have (averts imagined eye contact) a paid for virus protection (Norton 360) *runs and hides!* and had them take remote control of my computer this morning, they could find no virus or malware on my computer which could be causing this. The assistant even went through all the recent downloads I've had and queried everything to see if it had anything to do with this but nothing did. At least I know it's not a virus though, they seem think it could be a hardware issue.

I had it happen again this morning (before the remote access) and I tried the wired keyboard but got nowhere at all so I am now thinking it's the tower itself rather than a dodgy keyboard or mouse.

I've tried wading through Google and have seen a few suggestions but they are really complex to understand and most of the time the only suggestion is to turn the computer off with the power button by holding a few seconds and then restarting which is what I have been doing already just lately. This does work but the whole thing will occur within a few hours or a day or two later and also mid-use. It is really disconcerting when you are watching the mouse curser just vanish from the screen when your doing nothing other than making it move across the screen.

Another suggestion was to make sure the mouse is connected to a USB2 port and not a USB3 port. Apparently one is blue in colour the other is red in colour. My wireless devices are already connected to USB2 ports so this means nothing to me but maybe if someone else has this issue this could help?

On the pages I've found complaining about this issue it does seem to be a Windows 7 issue rather than Windows 8 or 8.1 issue. I have Windows 8.1 I read things about BIOS being altered and just really do not understand as much as I read. I have tried all the other suggestions I've read via Google so far and nothing has worked.

I have contacted the company I got the computer from. It's not old at all and to be experiencing this so early on is beyond not OK IMO. I just hope they don't request it gets sent back and fixed because I rely heavily on my computer and would be pretty worried without it! They are a UK company but not near me and I'm just hoping something can be arranged if they are able to help because at the very least, for the price paid if this is a hardware issue it makes the computer not fit for purpose and to coin a Martin Lewis term: the SAD FART rule would definitely apply here!

If this gets worse I shall take it into the local repair man, who only charged me £20 last time. They see these problems all the time, and have an immediate answer.

Did they sell you the Wireless Mouse/Keyboard combo...
you won't prove it's a hardware issue with the PC and thus not fit for purpose.
  • You say that you tried a wired keyboard and mouse and the problems still exist?
Have you tried looking to see if your usb drivers are the most recent and working properly?
Unfortunately i can only offer that as a question, and not describe to you how to check them! But surely if both the wired and wireless mouse and keyboards are experiencing the same symptoms it must be the pc itself or the usb drivers.
What happens if you try plugging them into a different usb socket than the one you have been using?

It is worth checking your drivers:
Go to Control Panel> Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers.
You may not have the matching driver for your keyboard/mouse?
You may have more than one driver for the keyboard/mouse(?), this can cause issues.
Remove any drivers you do not need and try updating those you use.

    Go to:
Control Panel > System and Security > System > Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus Controllers
There may be a warning triangle beside one or more of the items(?), that would indicate a fault with USB controller.

I did this check earlier when trying to alter the power levels to make sure they were set to "maximum" and I thought I'd just check all the software was up to date.
Everything is up to date (and no warning triangles) but I appear to have duplicates of both the mouse and keyboard.
I thought about deleting one but wasn't sure which and didn't want to inadvertently delete both if they are both just shortcuts to the same file or something. I've no idea how to tell which is being used or if both are being used, but I do know the software is up to date for both for what it's worth!

Any idea on which to try to delete or is it really luck of the draw

Thanks for the suggestion. I did already run a check on the software (I ran this earlier on a few days ago). I was wondering if I could "repair" the software via the programs and features but it appears everything is working fine according to the computer.
    Hmmmmmmm.....
I've not tried different USB sockets though, will try this next but am aware that if it happens to two different USB ports already (on either side of the computer) it is likely to be the tower itself or the computer itself rather than the connections to the USB sockets if I'm understanding correctly.

no, they didn't say it was the keyboard, they said it was the computer (this is because I told them I'd already tried several different keyboards and mice with the same effect). The only thing the guy could do was to see if the virus protection was working or had picked anything untoward up which it had not. He went one step further and analysed every new download I took on since the problems began in late October but everything came out fine so it was more a process of elimination rather than outward blame.

I have sent an email to the company I got the computer from and just hope they reply because it's over a year old and I am not the person who paid nor whom it was addressed to so I may find it difficult to get help.
