For what its worth, I live a 10 minute walk from my local post office but it most certainly isn't open 7am-11pm. On an average work day for me its not open while I'm at home. My place of work is miles from the nearest post office, and I can't make it there and back within my lunch break so would need to stay late at work to make up for time missed.

But then who cares about any one of our personal circumstances, only the OP's matters here.

So how long does it take you to walk out of your house lock the door, get in your car, fasten your seat belt, drive that 0.3 of a mile ,park your car, walk to the PO, join a queue, get the parcel weighed and wait for the documentation. Surely you must realise that it's not possible to do this in 60 to 90 seconds.

And while you're there - add the disutility suffered from knowing that you're putting in all this effort to remedy a mistake that you didn't make in the first place!

Before all this rubbish about 'being reasonable' and advising the OP 'not to be a difficult' it's important to remember than she is a paying customer and as such is entitled to a service from the retailer, not the other way around.

Since joining MSE, I'm surprised to see just how strong the pro-retailer sentiment is.

Any idea why that might be?

    Very true.

A very high percentage of the regulars here actually work in retail. Not a good place to get an unbiased opinion.

Because of the high degree of retail staff who post here.

Most new members who come here for advice end up being accused of lying and they soon disappear.

So from your house to giving the parcel to the post office teller takes 90 secs. Wow you must be The Flash

If you are going try to be sarcastic, at least get the facts correct, but then again, you never usually let facts bother your anti retailer rants do you?

MSK didn't say it would only take 90 seconds from leaving their house to getting served.
They clearly stated that the drive would take about 60 seconds, and once in the post office, the wait would be about 30 seconds.
So getting to the car, parking the car, walking to the PO etc were not mentioned simply because these were not relevant to the 90 second time stated.

This is the Zandoni world version though. With me it takes a drive of 60 seconds and an average wait once in of between 0 and 30 seconds.

Hi George. I think this is precisely the point Zandoni was trying to make.

MSK failed to mention information crucial to assessing the Post Office vs Courier debate we've been having.

Now you're being silly, you can't just quote the time fo a part of the process. Even if that was acceptable he couldn't do it any where near the 60 to 90 secs quoted.

The seller should take the easiest route to inconvenience the buyer as little as possible. I have just had a double order from Amazon, they are willing to pick up from anywhere I like.

Personally I would get them to pick it up from me at work. The Post Office can take a great chunk out of your life.

    Thanks Zandoni. I agree.

I don't have a car, the nearest post office requires a bus ride. I work on the outskirts of a city and leave home at 7am and get back at 6.40pm. The nearest post office from work is once again over a mile away. I requested a pick up from work, which would save me at least two hours journey, and taking more time off work.

I would have normally happily done this journey, however, given the appalling service from O2, and the gruff dismissive customer service, I have no wish to go out of my way for them anymore.

I've been very honest about the second phone, worth £400, which turned up. I could have kept quiet about that. There's been no appreciation of this.

Coupled with the wasted time (five days!) over Christmas, I do expect a much more substantial compensation.

The OP was honest enough to report that the initial phone had arrived, she went out of her way once to inform O2.

The OP is feels that she is entitled to a level of compensation above £20. She feels that the level of utility obtained from spending that £20 compensation to be less than the disutility suffered by O2/the couriers incompetence. To prevent herself from suffering further disutility at the hands of the retailer, she has proposed a solution in which O2 can have their phone back, but on her terms.

    I deem that fair.

Thank you :) This is precisely how I feel.

Ask them for an increased amount of money that you feel does adequately compensate you for the inconvenience of waiting for a courier / taking it to a Post Office. As you have the phone you also have the upper hand with regard to negotiating the compensation.

I think this is what I'm gong to do. I'm currently looking for contact details of someone higher up in O2, and sending them an email. I'll be holding onto the second phone until O2 acknowledges the difficulties and appreciate the honesty in relation to the second phone.

    Who says you can't.
    You?

Of course you can quote part of the time provided that you make it clear this is what you are quoting, which is exactly what was done.
