I purchased a Mcafee Livesafe subscription from pcworld (ok, fair enough some people may claim thats a duff source!) when we purchased a brand new laptop in the sales this time last year, and part of the package with Mcafee covered installing it onto your moblie phones, which i subsequently did, thinking i was being prudent.
When it installs onto your phone one of the permissions is to allow the app to send texts, thinking it wouldn't be a massive problem i clicked "accept", and then some weeks later i happened to look at i mobile phone bill and found a load of charges for text messages to a number i didn't recognise so googled the number and found out it to be a number in America belonging to Mcafee, that the app sends messages to and from to update the app rather than using data or wifi.
If you don't believe what i'm saying google it and see what you can find!
In fact to save you the trouble here's just one link for you!

Ah so no scam or tickery, just a user being a numpty. :rotfl:
And that is just for activation, you'll not be able to update over SMS.0 -

Only in the way of being a numpty by purchasing a Mcafee product to start with, i personaly would class it as trickery, why would you expect an app to send and recieve text messages from america at a rate of around four to five messages every other day for almost three weeks running, without digging out my old bill i can't be certain of the amount but it was something around this figure.0 -
The Loan Stranger - your warning:Just be aware that some of the so called "free" apps update themselves
Referred to 'free' apps - whilst it turns out you were talking about a paid one. So yes, this one's on you, and you're scaring people for no reason.
You should be warning people about buying 'a Mcafee Livesafe subscription' which I would certainly agree with!0 -

They are both the same thing, on the purchased software it just gives you a link to the Mcafee app to install on your mobile devices!0 -
Your warning refers specifically to McAfee then, not all 'so called free apps' like you said in your original post.0

You're not a politician by any chance are you?
You seem to be reading something in your mind rather than whats actually been written, and then answering with what you want to say regardless to whats actually relevent.
If you could just point out where i said ALL "so called free apps" it would be much appreciated!
I was merely trying to save some people from using products that claim to be free, where in fact they're not actually free to use, after all this is supposed to be a money saving website, is it not?0 -
You said some 'so called free apps' in your first post in the thread - #5.
You did not say ALL, and I didn't quote you saying that.
Your aim to help is not in doubt, but you made a blanket statement, whereas you were referring to your very specific experience of 1 app, that you bought (so not even a free app!), that you had to pay to update, that if you'd checked at the time of purchase, you would have known (and probably walked away).
To say there are 'some so called free apps' out there waiting to rip people off, only scares people without reason.0
