free security packages for Hudl 2 and lg g3 smart phone

Hi,
These were presents from Santa!!

Do I need to download any security onto them or will they have any pre-installed? Not familiar with the Android system so not sure where to look to see what's already installed.

I presume I need a firewall as well as protection against malwear, viruses etc.

As should be obvious I don't really understand internet security so any help you can give will be very much appreciated. kje

AV / Firewall not required see multiple identical questions .
Avast and 360 security are two free ones on the store if you require .

Key is to only download genuine software from the Play store etc .

I find 'Lookout' good on my Android devices - stays out of the way and has a few extra features for free.

All the big names in pc anti virus have apps in the play store for android tablets/phones.
Have a look and pick one of your choice....I wouldn't pay for one mind, free is the way to go.
    I am currently using Avast
  • Just be aware that some of the so called "free" apps update themselves by sending premium rate text messages, so are not always "completely free", i un-installed Mcafee for this reason as it kept sending and recieving texts to and from an american number at 40p a go!

    Erm, hogwash.
Install stuff from duff sources and you'll get scammed, stick to know sources and you'll be fine.

Amazon app store has the AVG premium app on for free at the moment, or did last night.

None are required. They wont/can't do anything anyway.

A firewall is not required either. It couldn't do anything either.

Unless you have root access (and if you are not technically minded and not sure why you would want it you don't want it) then any security software for android is useless.

All apps for Android can only be installed after asking the user. By allowing an app to install you let it do whatever it has been programmed to do. If that app is malicious you have specifically allowed that app to do its naughty thing.

As all apps have permission to do what they do any security software cannot stop them doing anything as they have been given permission by the user. Any funny business then is the fault of the user who allowed installation.

All security software for Android can do is drain the battery faster and make the device run slower.

Only install apps from a reputable source (such as Google Play) and you should be OK. Just make sure you try and only install legitimate apps. There are some dodgy ones on the Play Store.

    Well said wongataa.

These companies releasing apps just confuse users into thinking they need them!

Yes i just has to disable Mcafee on my tablet as it come pre-installed and their is no way to uninstall pre-installed apps, so it looks like Mcafee has found a way to get people to use their crap product rather than just sticking a disc in with every sold PC/Laptop

    Not at all!
I purchased a Mcafee Livesafe subscription from pcworld (ok, fair enough some people may claim thats a duff source!) when we purchased a brand new laptop in the sales this time last year, and part of the package with Mcafee covered installing it onto your moblie phones, which i subsequently did, thinking i was being prudent.
When it installs onto your phone one of the permissions is to allow the app to send texts, thinking it wouldn't be a massive problem i clicked "accept", and then some weeks later i happened to look at i mobile phone bill and found a load of charges for text messages to a number i didn't recognise so googled the number and found out it to be a number in America belonging to Mcafee, that the app sends messages to and from to update the app rather than using data or wifi.
If you don't believe what i'm saying google it and see what you can find! ;)

In fact to save you the trouble here's just one link for you!
