(Also - civil partnerships).
There is the remaining question that while there may be no absolute prohibition on renting from them because they are a 'close relative', the issue of if the tenancy would be commercial remains.
Have they previously rented their property out to anyone?
Would they evict you on non-payment?
Is there a proper legal agreement - or is it being done informally.
it is a legal tenancy agreement, Im not renting the house, just a room, with shared facilities. Yes the agreement does state terms and conditions, including eviction on non payment.0 -
HMRC's definition, obviously council's definition may differ,
Definition of Close Relative
The Working Tax Credit (Entitlement and Maximum Rate) Regulations 2002, Reg. 9B(4)
Generally the definition of close relative is:- parent
- parent in law
- son
- son in law
- daughter
- daughter in law
- step parent
- step son
- step daughter
- brother
- sister
- or the partner of any of the above.
It's someone else's fault.0 -

yes you can rent from a close relative.i rent a house from my sister she owns and rents out propertiesI have had my HB declined as they say I live with a close relative.
The person I rent a room from is child from a previous marrage of my fathers second wife.
the person was never legally adopted by my father, and we never lived together as children. Many years passed without any contact, we only met up again recently. There is no blood tie between us, and as far as I can make our by law, she is not recognised as a 'close relative' can anyone please advise ?

If your father is still married to his second wife by association that makes you step siblings which is classed as close relative.0 -
