if there is no obvious signs of problems ..ie damp it could be that the new plaster wasn't sealed before painting .
if it has gone back to bare plaster thin some matt emulsion down to seal it , and then paint as normal . could have been caused by heat

There's no damp at all, more the heat off the fire the wall gets very hot,and yes it nearly all has gone back to the bare plaster, further away from the fireplace we cannot get anymore of the paint off, but it has left a ridge of deep emulsion, bet we will have to paper the wall now, after lineing it..........
oh what a mess it looks..........................

I go along with what Nick says, but if its gone back to the bare plaster, and you have taken as much off as you can, but are worried that the surface is uneven, then I can tell you what to do so to save you from lining or papering it.

But thats only if its gone back to the bare plaster, if there is limps, and holes, cracks etc all over it, then it would be best to line it after filling it of course.:D

    Is it anything like this.......

The pink bits is the bare plaster, and the white paint is the paint I couldnt for the life of me scrape off.

    Here is what you do.

Sand down the paint that is still on there, with a medium grade sandpaper, try and smooth as much as jagged bits of the paint as you can, even if some of it is going on to the bare plaster.

Get some diluted PVA, and brush on the actual paint area that you have just sanded, try not to get any on the bare plaster, dont worry if it goes on a tiny bit of the plaster, but try and keep PVA to the actual painted area.

When dry, run your hand over the bits you have sanded/PVAed, and if you still feel its not smooth and still slightly jagged, then get some powder filler, not the ready made stuff, and fill lightly over the still jagged or indented bits, and if you have any cracks etc, fill them as well.

When the filler is dry, sand down the filled bits, dont go mad and rub like hell lol, just gentley enough to get the worst of the filler off, again rub your hand over it and if it feels flush with the wall, and there is no jagged/ rough bits , and your happy with it, then your ready for the next stage.

I would definately suggest a miscoat on this wall, and any other walls like it,dont use silk, but try and buy some trade white, ie supermatt, or contracters matt, or just trade matt.

Before you actually do your miscoat, and as your going to dilute the paint anyway for your miscoat, brush on these filled bits at least 2-3 times with the diluted paint.
Then roll your miscoat, and then do your proper coats.

What the PVAing does before you fill, is that when you have sanded the old flakey paint, what sometimes happens the next day you go to wall,is that paint can flake up again, so by PVAing this prior to filling stops it flaking up and peeling any further.

By 'spotting' the filled areas, (dabbing the paint on with the brush) this prevents the filler from lifting onto your roller, and also minimises the filler bleeding thru your final coat.

I had to do exactly this on the wall I showed you in the pic, and in fact, parts of the wall had blown, so I had to practically fill the whole wall, as well as use some patch plaster on the blown areas, and I did exactly what I am telling you, and I will upload you the result in a little while.:D

Here is the same wall after I have done as I described earlier, as you can see I had to do a lot of filling and patch plastering, so when you have an amount of filler like I did on the wall, its best to dilute some PVA and go over all the filled areas, this like I said before will stop the filler from blowing and going onto your roller.
But your filling I would imagine would be a lot less, therefore spot the filler with the diluted paint prior to rolling.

    This is the end result.

:T Fantastic results misgrace, are you a painter and decorator,
my thick amount of emulsion is in a vertical line, we scored the paint work with a stanley knife, so should we just fan some filler in because you can feel the difference. rest of the wall where the paint has peeled off is very smooth
apart from a couple of air line cracks which we have filled and are waiting to sand off, thanks again you have been a great help, you must be so proud of your perfect wall.:D

Yes you are a painter and decorator silly me. great work.
