Cancelling Sky (maybe?) - help appreciated

Hi I live back at home with my dad. He has a Sky contract with discounts that's due to expire end of Jan and can't afford to carry on at the increased price. Having priced up the various options including cashback sites it makes sense to take up another provider - the only thing he has extra is sky sports. But, for me to take over payments as a new customer on sky keeps prices reasonable including sky sports. I have a couple of questions - can I do this living at the same address; it will be a separate payment account??? And, if not can anyone recommend a good, cheap alternative. We're currently £43 a month going up to approx. £65. Cheers

Wouldn't the easiest option be to just get your dad to call up Sky and try and negotiate another discount, similar or greater than the one he has now?0

If he/you can't afford it ......... cancel Sky."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Thank you Mije - be nice if it was that easy - my dad is hard of hearing; he can use a computer to chat but it'd be a lengthy process.! I am being a bit lazy using a forum to try an get answers rather than researching myself but if anyone can, makes it much easier0

If you have the same surname then you will not be able to immediately rejoin as a "new customer"
As others stated cancelling will/may bring offers, not "threatening to cancel" just cancel.
Maybe ask your father for permission and to nominate you to phone as his agent, or if he agrees just simply pretend to be him, and cancel due to finances.0 -
I deal with people doing this all the time.
Just ring Sky and make sure you go through to cancellations. Explain that your Dad wants you to speak to them on his behalf as he is hard of hearing and they will speak to him and confirm this is the case- and then he give you the phone back . Explain you are thinking of cancelling due to cost -The retentions team will find offers to apply in about 90% of cases - I'm afraid Kurtis isn't correct in saying just threatening to cancel won't get you offers. (My contract prohibits me from saying directly who I work for -on the net btw). He is right about not been able to close one account and open another in the same surname though.
My advice would be -you get better offers if you are nice rather than a git to the retentions agentThey know it's a game - but until you say you want to cancel they can't make particular offers to you-like most large companies boxes need to be ticked before a reduction is made
No need to tell a pack of lies or pretend to be him - You wouldn't believe how many people end up looking really stupid when they can't answer basic security questions - My favourites are the ones who "can't remember" their date of birth
If your Dad uses teletype relay for phones Sky will take a call through that system btwI Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

affordability wasn't really the issue; I asked if whether I could apply in my own name and if not for recommendations, but thanks for replying

Thanks - I've just taken over the contract; seemed the easiest way just a bit annoying I can't get the new customer rate as effectively I am having just come back. Oh well! Appreciate all your advice0
